Dear
Bar ,
as
recently di-
agnosed with
a chocolate
allergy and
wonder if you could recommend
any substitutes? Thanks, Cary.
nswer: Dear Cary, first
* of all, make sure you are
_J._ .1....eliminating chocolate
(cocoa) from all potential sourc-
es, that includes checking the
ingredients in soft drinks, candy,
baked goods, ice cream and other
items that may contain cocoa.
Carob can be an excellent substi-
tute for chocolate. Derived from
the fruit pod of the carob tree (a
legume in the pea family), carob
(after being dried or roast-
ed) comes in powdered or
chip form and has a mildly
sweet taste similar to
(.'''/ \ chocolate.

Carob was eaten back
in ancient Egypt. Dried
carob fruit is tradition-
ally eaten on the Jewish
holiday of Tu Bishvat,
and carob juice drinks
are also traditionally
drunk during the Islamic
month of Ramadan.
In history, carob has had many
uses, including, as a sustenance
food, a source of sugar (before
sugarcane and sugar beets), and,
more recently, even as a substitute
for chocolate in dog treats.
Carob is a healthy food, rich in
calcium and containing many vi-
tamins and minerals. I hope this
answers your question.
