I
n time for Lag b'Omer, a tra-
ditional time for haircuts,
Adat Shalom Synagogue in
Farmington Hills held its first "Hair
Donation Party" on May 13. The pur-
pose was to donate hair to make wigs
for cancer patients, mostly children.
Madison Marcus, Kadima Youth
Group adviser at Adat Shalom, came
up with the idea six months earlier.
Madison's grandmother had died
from cancer and it became a family
tradition to donate hair. Her mother
has donated 14 inches of hair, and
Madison has donated three times.
Madison and her sister, Mimi, expect
to donate again when their hair is long
enough. Madison hopes the event will
become something done annually at
Adat Shalom.
Teens were not the only ones at the
event. People of all ages came to show
support. Even a male college student
grew his hair out so he could donate.
Claire Wolfe, 5, of Royal Oak was very
enthusiastic about the event. "When I
was 3, I was on my way to get my bangs
cut. When the hairdresser pulled out
the scissors I asked him to stop because
I decided I wanted to donate my hair,"
she said. Her mother, Marla Schram-
Wolfe, who also donated, said, "Claire
decided to donate her hair all on her
own and I couldn't be more prou•
So, for 26 months Claire grew out
her hair, hoping that she would be able
to make another little girl smile. As
soon as her hair was cut at the event,
Claire — with a huge smile on her
face — said,"Look, I did it! I was so
excited to do this and now I can't wait
to do it again:'
All this was possible because of the
amazing staff of Ruby Blu Salon in
Farmington Hills. They cut and styled
every person's hair for free. In addition
to donating their services, the staff
stayed two hours longer to make sure
everyone could donate and look great.
All in all, at least 400 inches of hair
were donated to Pantene Beautiful
Lengths, which means more than 66
wigs will be created. The event was so
successful that it goes to show that we
cut because we care.
