Temple and Synagogue Listings Sponsored by Sisterhood Donor Day The Adat Shalom Synagogue Sisterhood will welcome Jeffrey Zaslow as guest speaker at its annual Donor Day event on Monday, May 18, at the Toby Dobkin Farmington Hills synagogue. The author of The Last Lecture and The Girls from Ames, Zaslow is a columnist for the Wall Street Journal and a local resident. As part of the program, the Adat Shalom Sisterhood will honor the memory of the late Toby Dobkin, a Holocaust survi- vor who was a vibrant and active member of sisterhood. An array of boutiques has been planned from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. The program and lunch will begin at 11 a.m. Donor Day chairpersons are Cindy Babcock, Shelly Perlman, Lillian Schostak and Adele Staller. There is a minimum of $45 to attend the luncheon and program, which is sister- hood's major fundraising event of the year. Lunch reservations are required. There is no charge for boutique shopping. Volunteer Recognized The National Council of Jewish Women-Greater Detroit Section has chosen Barbara Mayer of Bloomfield Township as recipient of the 2009 Ann Rubin Barbara Mayer Volunteer Award. Mayer will receive the award at the organization's spring event at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 21, at Wabeek Country Club, Bloomfield Township. Mayer is founding chair of the foster care program at Orchards Children's Services, Southfield. She is chair of the agency's Michel-Rodecker Endowment Fund. Since 1987, she has been an NCJW-GDS Children's Advocate within the Oakland County Family Court system. She also has chaired the NCJW-GDS human resources committee, initiated a partnership with the New Bethel Shelter in Pontiac and began the backpack program, which each year distributes packs filled with school supplies to needy children in Wayne and Oakland counties. Mayer co-chairs the NCJW-GDS Adventures in Reading program. Guest speaker at the May 21 luncheon will be Sherry Margolis, Emmy Award- winning news anchor at Detroit's WJBK- FOX 2 News.
