nsv.,-r: Dear Jessica, Let's
start with the terminol-
ogy—sometimes referred
to as "super-veggies," brassicas
are members of the Brassicaceae
or mustard family of vegetables
and were formerly known as the
Cruciferae or crucifer family,
hence, they are often also called
crucifers.
Some of the more common
brassicas include cabbage, broc-
coli, cauliflower, Brus-
i sels sprouts, turnips, and
\ swedes (aka rutabagas).
' \ Others (perhaps less
( \ familiar) include broccoli
raab, collards, cress,
iii i
kale, arugula, kohlrabi,
mustard, and bok choi.
The "super-veggie" la-
bel for brassica vegeta-
bles comes from their
fairly-earned reputation
for being high in nutri-
tional value, containing
high levels of various vitamins,
minerals, anti-oxidants, fiber, and
other wellness properties.
Broccoli may be the most potent
member of Brassicaceae, possess-
ing loads of vitamin C, soluble fi-
ber, selenium. and other nutrients
strongly believed to have impor-
tant anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and
anti-cancer activity.
Brassicas are the real deal.
