avid Solomon, a senior
at the Frankel Jewish
Academy in West
Bloomfield, will receive Boy Scouts'
highest honor — Eagle Scout
— later this month. Solomon,
who joined the Boy Scouts in third
grade, has earned the requisite 21
badges to attain this ranking.
"So many accomplished people,
such as presidents and astronauts,
will tell you that they were Eagle
Scouts," David said.
This realization was further
motivation for him to pursue the
rank of Eagle Scout.
A final Eagle Scout requirement
was a leadership service project,
which meant, in part, that David
would be in charge of teaching oth-
ers. He learned from FJA Head of
School Rabbi Eric Grossman that
FJA needed a shulchan, or table,
for Torah reading. It would be
up to him to design the table and
instruct others in its creation. After
photographing shulchanim in vari-
ous local synagogues, David began
designing the table.
He needed to learn woodworking.
Ted Harper, who teaches sculpt-
ing and woodworking at FJA, was a
Scout and more than happy to join in
David's project. They started meeting
every Tuesday and Thursday
"I brought Mr. Harper my sketches
and then he modified them," David
said. "He was able to visualize the
most amazing details and knew how
to make them work."
The oak and cherry shulchan that
matches the woods used in the ark in
the FJA Beit Midrash (house of study)
is a masterpiece.
"When the table was finished, I
swear I started drooling," David said.
"It was so far beyond my expecta-
tions."
Not only was this project meaning-
ful to him, but he also knew it would
be meaningful to FJA students and
faculty as well. Becoming an Eagle

David Solomon built this Torah table for

his school as an Eagle Scout project.

Scout was another important aspect.
"In my mind," David said,
"Scouting laws are the summation
of Judaism. Each of the Scout laws
mirror a Jewish value. Kindness is
a Scout value in the same way that
g'milut chasadim (acts of loving
kindness) is a Jewish value."
Learning from Harper also helped
David fulfill the Jewish tradition of
aseh lecha ray, or finding yourself a
teacher. As a person who values his
commitment to Judaism, David enjoys
Scouting because it involves having a
belief system.
"When you go to a meeting, you
see all the different emblems," he
said. "You are united even though
there is a great diversity. We are all
obligated by Scout principles. Scouts
has given me something that you
can't get anywhere else." 1
