New Trek
412 The new Star Trek prequel, simply
43) titled Star Trek, opens Friday, May
vim 8. Directed by J.J. Abrams (co-
r o
il' creator/co-writer of the TV series
Alias, Lost and Fringe), the film
features mostly young actors who
play the familiar Star Trek charac-
ters as they first meet and embark
on their early space adventures.
Portraying the Russian Pavel
Chekov is Anton
Yelchin, 20, whose
parents, both top figure
skaters, boldly left a
good life in the Soviet
Union in 1989 to seek a
better life in America.
Yelchin follows in the
Anton Yelchin
footsteps of Walter
Koenig, 73, who cre-
ated the role of Chekov. In the
1920s, Koenig's Jewish parents left
Lithuania, then part of the Soviet
Union, for America.
Winona Ryder, 37, plays the
human mother of the half-Vulcan
Spock. Leonard Nimoy, 78, who
created the role of Spock, is the
only original cast member in the
new film, playing a cameo.
Nimoy also will guest star in the
season finale of Fringe at 9 p.m.
Tuesday, May 12, on FOX. He'll play
William Bell, a mysterious scientist,
who'll show up next season.
Foxy Lady
Michael J. Fox, 47, and his actress
wife Tracy Pollan, 48, are mem-
bers of a Manhattan Reform syna-
gogue, and their four children have
been raised Jewish — though Fox
never converted.
In early 2008, the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations
presented Fox with its Bearer
of Light Award for his work with
Parkinson's disease, with which he
was diagnosed at age 30. He hosts
the ABC documentary Michael J.

hope, talking to
both famous and everyday people.
Pollan, meanwhile, starred last
month in Lifetime's The Natalee
Holloway Story, as Natalee's
mother; she is in the midst of a
three-episode arc on NBC's Medium,
starring Patricia Arquette, as a
"corporate intuitionist." The last
episode of the season finale airs
10 p.m. Monday, May 11. Jeffrey
Tambor co-stars.
Shmata Show
Bravo cable TV had a hit with
Project Runway, which began airing
in 2004 and will move to Lifetime
cable this summer. Meanwhile,
Bravo has created its own Runway
knockoff, The Fashion Show, which
premieres 10 p.m. Thursday, May 7.
It has 15 designers competing
for a $125,000 prize and a chance
to have their designs marketed in
stores. It will run for 10 weeks.
Fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi,
47, is the host of the Bravo series
and a judge. The other
judges are singer-actress
Kelly Rowland and Fern
Mallis, 67, a vice president
of IMG Fashion and the
"organizer/queen" of New
York City's Fashion Week.
She also has helped put
on various Jewish cultural
Fern Mallis
events in New York.

"I think this is something moms and
kids can share with each other," says
Shafrir, 31, whose day job is reporting
for the New York Observer.
"With the book, we were able to give
more context to the messages than we do
online. After separating them by theme,
we gave each chapter an introduction. It
all feels more created than the Web site"
Tessler's e-mail begins, "There seemed
to be some discrepancy as to what date
the first seder is, so I called Temple
Israel" Another e-mail reads,"I'm a
Jewish mother and felt compelled to ...
suggest that you see a physician."
Shafrir and Grose, who got the book
offer one month after they started the
site (March of last year), wanted the
messages in Love, Mom to be different
from the ones on the Web. On a tight
deadline, they found the hardest part
was getting signed permission forms
from the moms whose e-mails were fea-
tured (names in the book's e-mails are
changed to maintain privacy).
The authors had no problems finding
interesting and provocative messages.
Within two weeks of launch, the site had
more than 100,000 submissions. Some
200 are in the book.
"I learned that Jewish mothers don't
have a monopoly on guilt:' says Shafrir,
who grew up with temple activities,
attended a Jewish summer camp and
toured Israel with a Birthright group.
"As we get close to Mother's Day,
I think these e-mails show there's a
community of moms who have the
same concerns for their adult children,
and our book celebrates all that. We're
laughing with them; we're not laughing
at them."
