Farrakhan's Wrong I must reply to Robert Sklar's Editor's Letter concerning the Rev. Louis Farrakhan ("The Folly Of Farrakhan," April 23, page A5). I believe the black community has enough problems to eradicate without hating another corn- munity. Examples include education, jobs, health care, crime, discrimination. Either you're too light or too dark. This was the way the slave masters kept the black race divided and it still holds strong. Another example is injustice in the courts for black America. I have never followed Farrakhan's teaching. He has no use for me either, especially now. Slave masters taught their religion to the slaves. It was illegal to teach a slave to read and write, thus slaves could not read for themselves any bible. The same people who enslaved us, taught the world blacks had tails and horns and taught the blacks that Jews were evil, had horns and killed Jesus. Some Jews did own slaves and fought on the side of the Confederacy. They also knew they were prohibited from owning slaves under Jewish law. You cannot hold a whole group of people responsible for the actions of a few. Blacks have long embraced the notion there were only two acceptable religions for us. Christian and Muslim. Wrong: My family has embraced Judaism. I see the Jewish community actively fighting to stop the genocide in Darfur. This is a Muslim community the Jewish commu- nity is working to save. Where is the out- rage from the black and Muslim America communities concerning Darfur? The Jewish community has treated me and my family fairer, kinder and better than any community on this Earth, including the black community. Mr. Farrakhan, I am thrilled to be Jewish. McMillan Blacks And Farrakhan Your Editor's Letter "The Folly Of Farrakhan" (April 23, page A5) posed the following question: Do Jews challenge Rev. Louis Farrakhan enough? I think a better question is: Do blacks challenge Rev. Farrakhan enough? That is, promi- nent blacks, clerical blacks and blacks in leadership roles of major black civil rights organizations. How many of them remember that we Jews supported them in the NAACP and CORE (Congress of Racial Equality). And we marched with them at Selma? Common decency would dictate that black leadership should challenge Rev. Farrakhan; but, beyond that, we Jews have earned the support of blacks. Beyond our local Rev. Glenn Plummer, where is it? West Bloomfield Erwin Posner Southfield Ignore Farrakhan CELEBRATE YOUR BAR / BAT MITZVAH AT Yom HaZikaron ceremony last week ("Yom HaZikaron," April 30, page B25). Once again this year, our attendance reflected the deep connection our com- munity has to Eretz Yisrael. Over 500 strong, we stood together and remem- bered Israel's fallen soldiers and victims of terror as we prayed for the release of Gilad Shalit. As the Jewish community of Detroit well understands, our support of Israel during these turbulent times continues to be of the utmost importance. I have been honored to co-chair this ceremony for the past few years with Clara Gaba; we are so grateful to Federation pro- fessionals Amy Neistein and shaliach Yoav Raban for all their hard work and dedication. This year, we added a memorial candle for the 2008 Cast Lead war in Gaza. May we soon see the day when no additional candles are necessary. The shande (shame) is to devote a whole page to Rev. Louis Farrakhan ("The Folly Of Farrakhan," April 23, page A5), who uses freedom of speech to rail against Jews as his only means of gaining attention to himself. It is time that Jewish people discredit his speeches and make him look like the silly fool he is. We do not need anyone to invent and rewrite our history. Nothing he says deserves print or voice. Enough? Yes! Gloria Krause West Bloomfield Strong For Israel I want to thank the Jewish News for its meaningful coverage of our community Inspired Vision Publisher Arthur Horwitz' column "Bridging Detroit And Ann Arbor" (April 16, page A5) was inspiring, creative and visionary. JARC stands ready to explore collaborative opportunities with Arthur, the Jewish News and other organizations in Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor. As JARC embarks on our 40th anniversary, we remain committed to enabling people with developmental disabilities to live full, dignified lives in the community. We look forward to the journey ahead and to the endless possibilities of enhancing our collective Jewish community. Richard A. Loewenstein chief executive officer, JARC Farmington Hills
