Dear
Bar , me
say that the
pancreas plays
a role in weight
gain and food
cravings. Any comments? Alicia.

nswcr: Dear Alicia, the
pancreas is a gland in the
._
endocrine and digestive
systems of vertebrates (includ-
ing humans) located behind the
stomach. As an endocrine gland,
it produces important hormones
such as insulin and glucagon that
play a role in regulating metabo-
lism. The pancreas also acts as an
exocrine gland, secreting digestive
enzymes that assist in the break-
down of carbohydrates (carbs),
protein and fat.

The body converts carbs
I) into blood sugar (glucose),
0 which triggers the pan-
`'/ ! creas to secrete insulin
that stimulates cells to
store/regulate glucose—
)
ideally returning blood
sugar levels to normal.

Some people may be
overly sensitive to carbs
and others may con-
sume too many, which
may lead to a condition
known as "insulin resis-
tance" that results in increased
cravings and weight gain.

Some action steps: (1) Increase
exercise to reduce insulin levels
in the blood; (2) Increase protein
intake and spread moderate carb
intake throughout the day; (3)
Seek professional assistance to
lose weight and to help keep it off.
