A

nswer (con tin tilted from
last time): Dear Julie, Last
time, I discussed foods to
avoid during pregnancy and foods
that are safe to eat. In this final
installment on food and pregnan-
cy, I'd like to focus on foods that
are nutritionally recommended.

The Mayo Clinic has a wonderful
online resource regarding preg-
nancy and health. Among their
healthy per day eating recommen-
dations, are the following:
• 6-9 servings of whole grain
foods, e.g., whole-grain cere-
als/rice/wheat/pasta/bread
(look for products that list
whole grains first);
\ , • 3 or more servings of
fruit and 4 or more serv-
Itt i )
ings of veggies;
• 2 or more servings of
meat, poultry, fish, eggs,
or beans. Foods in this
group have plenty of
protein, B vitamins, and
iron (protein is crucial for
fetal growth, especially in
the 2nd and 3rd trimesters);
• 4 or more servings of dairy
products such as skim milk,
calcium-fortified soy milk, yo-
gurt, or natural cheese.

Also, reducing normal salt intake
is no longer recommended.
