Southeast Corner of Orchard Lake & Maple 6565 Orchard Lake Rd West Bloomfield MI 48322 vAvw.plummarketcom Yes On Bonds We are proud parents of students cur- rently attending or recently graduated from West Bloomfield Schools. Over the years, we feel the school district has provided a top-quality education and amazing academic and extracurricular opportunities to all students. On Tuesday, May 5, West Bloomfield School District voters will be asked to approve a bond proposal. Even if you do not have children attending West Bloomfield public schools, it is impor- tant that you vote "yes" for this bond proposal as it affects the heart and soul of West Bloomfield — our children and our schools. The bond proposal will help the school district make essential improve- ments and upgrades to its facilities with no increase to your property-tax millage rate based on estimated 2009 taxable values. As community mem- bers, we should all want to keep our property values up and ensure that our community is desirable to-businesses and future families. So prase vote "yes" on Tuesday, May 5, and join us in supporting West Bloomfield Schools. As we all know, the bottom line is that good schools are the heart of thriving communities! extreme emotions. White supremacists and radical hate groups use their sym- bols as part of their cultural armor to decorate their bodies and separate themselves from the general public and to get a rise from other people. They revel in reactions. These tattoos and icons can convey tremendous meaning and significance in a compact immedi- ate and recognizable form. Hate sym- bols instill fear and insecurity. The Anti-Defamation League under- stands the devastating power of hate symbols. As the most respected private authority on extremism and domestic terrorism, ADL understands that good information is crucial in the fight against hate. We should never ignore hatred, bias and bigotry. At every opportunity, we must bring this igno- rance out into the open and decry its existence. Whether we see swastikas or nooses or the KKK written on rocks or paper or cars, we must come together and be ready to act against this kind of hatred. Only when we are vigilant and responsive and looking out for each other can we become a caring commu- nity of peace and humanity. When one person is attacked we are all victims. Betsy S. Janice Tracht West Bloomfield Biidging Detroit, Ann Arbor I read with interest your Publisher's Notebook "Bridging Detroit And Ann Arbor" (April 16, page A5). As president of Ann Arbor's Beth Israel Congregation, I found your suggestion of holding "Torah and Tailgate" events at Beth Israel most interesting. Beth Israel holds Shabbat services at 9:30 a.m. every Shabbat, regardless of whether there is a game at Michigan Stadium that day. Metro Detroiters and anyone else in Ann Arbor for a foot- ball game or even just to pickup their children's laundry, are always welcome to attend. If kickoff takes place before kiddush is finished, you can usually tell how Michigan is doing by whether you can hear the cheers from the stadium as you leave our building. We look forward to seeing Detroit Jewish News readers this fall. Please feel free to introduce yourself to me, Rabbi Robert Dobrusin or Rabbi Blumenthal at kiddush. Haran Rashes, president West Bloomfield Power Of Words The Anti-Defamation League is a 96- year-old civil rights agency that fights hatred and bigotry and fights all forms of prejudice and discrimination. It is particularly poignant that we take notice of anti-Semitism this week with the backdrop of Durban II and the celebration of Yom HaShoah, the Holocaust Remembrance Day (April 21). As you may know, there was an instance of vandalism and desecra- tion of property that occurred on April 16, a few blocks from the University of Michigan law school in Ann Arbor. Several of the cars that were damaged were emblazoned with swas- tikas and foul language and the word "Jews" used as an epithet. Words and symbols are power- ful weapons, particularly to provoke Beth Israel Congregation Ann Arbor Soul Touching In 1997, I was part of the staff that accompanied 60 Detroit-area teenag- ers on the March of the Living. It was a profoundly life-changing event for me, filled with moments of awe at the height and the depth that my soul was touched. Twelve years later, another spark of awe ... Sam Ginglas's article "Carrying On The Legacy" (Teen2Teen, April 2009, page B1). Yes, Sam, we must all remember, and much responsibility for this lies on the shoulders of the third generation. Our Jewish community needs to get behind local teen Anna Eisenberg and support her efforts to establish Third Generation. In that way, these grand- children and great-grandchildren have a vehicle to put their youthful energies and talents into programs that contin- ue to educate, enlighten and touch the Corrections • In "A Native Daughter" (April 23, page Al2), Tel Aviv native Rachel Kapen, now of West Bloomfield, is shown in Kikar London (now Gan HaAtzmaut) near the beach in Tel Aviv, 1949. • The photo cap- tion in "Heroes Of Warsaw" (April 23, page A17), should have stated that it is Shirley Benyas of West Bloomfield who is leading the group in song.
