Help JNF
Water Israel

ewish National Fund
Michigan Board President
Jim Hiller is leading his
board into May under the
promotion "31 Days in May, Water
for Israel."
The grassroots campaign is to
raise money and awareness for
JNF's important work providing
additional water resources for
Israel.
The campaign follows a suc-
cessful Green Sunday phone-a-
thon, held in February, and a din-
ner last fall that honored Detroit
Jewish News Publisher Arthur
Horwitz and his wife, Gina.
JNF is helping combat the
worst water crisis Israel has
faced in over a decade. Israel's
reservoirs have hit a 10-year low.
Israel's main water source — the
Kinneret — is at its lowest level in
40 years because of four straight
dry winters. JNF provides much-
needed water resources to Israel
through its reservoirs and water-
treatment plants.
According to the U.N. water
index, Israel is suffering from a
severe water shortage. U.N. crite-
ria define the minimum quantity of
water necessary as 132,086 gal-
lons per person per year. Israel's
water sources can supply only
52.834 gallons per year per year,
only 40 percent of what the U.N.
considers minimal.
Israel's total water consumption
today stands at 500 billion gal-
lons of water per year. But by the
year 2020, the population of Israel
is expected to grow by another
three million people.
This means that the country will
require another 80 billion gallons
of drinking water in order to cope
with this population growth and
the ever-rising standard of living.
The campaign is chaired by
board members Allan Gale and
Jeff Mark, who said that while
JNF's history includes the Blue
Box. tree planting, and land pur-
chases, it has become so much
more. JNF builds security roads,
provides infrastructure for new
communities and has taken the
lead in water conservation and
establishing new water resources.
