Cranbrook Kingswood High
School should be renamed
"Hockeytown North." For
the 14th time in school history and
sixth time in nine seasons, the Cranes
are state champions.
A 4-3 win over Big Rapids at
Compuware Arena in Plymouth gave
Cranbrook (21-7-2) its latest state
title, a Division 3 championship.
Four Jewish players were on the
Cranbrook team. Three are expect-
ed to be key players on next year's
squad.
Aaron Rivkin is the lone senior
of the quartet. The left wing from
West Bloomfield had a great state
tournament run, scoring four goals
and dishing out four assists in six
games. He had two goals and one
assist against Big Rapids.
Rivkin's first two seasons at
Cranbrook were filled with injuries.
It looked like a knee injury was
going to sideline him this winter,
but Coach Andy Weidenbach said
Rivkin fought through the pain with
the use of a brace.
In 25 games, Rivkin had 11 goals
and 15 assists. His plus-minus score
was a plus 17.
Junior left wing Dakota Sherman
from Bloomfield Hills and junior
center-right wing Alex Loewenstein
from West Bloomfield were first-year
players. Both are multiple-sport ath-
letes who developed into important
members of the team.
Sherman played 29 games and
had four goals and three assists.
He scored the game's lone goal
in Cranbrook's 1-0 win over Flint
Powers Catholic in the state semi-
finals, and he assisted on the goal
that gave Cranbrook a 4-1 lead over
Big Rapids. Loewenstein had seven
goals and eight assists in 30 games.
Sophomore defenseman Spencer
Tamler from Birmingham had a
promising season derailed by a
fractured hand, bronchitis and a
concussion. He saw action in just six
games and ended up playing on the
junior varsity team.
