Shaarey Zedek's "Hebrew School
Musical" to make its debut.
n Sunday, May 3, at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek
(I) in Southfield, it will be the
"Start of Something ..."
That's when the curtain goes up
on Hebrew School Musical! — the
end-of-year musical production fea-
turing more than 125 Shaarey Zedek
Religious School and Hillel Day School
of Metropolitan Detroit students, ages
6 to 13. Based on the story and music
of Disney's hit High School Musical, the
Shaarey Zedek version was written by
Rabbi Eric Yanoff.
Hebrew School Musical tells the story
of middle-schoolers Troy (played by
Myles Berrin) and Gabriella (Lauren
Colburn), who come together with
their friends to celebrate their b'nai
mitzvah while balancing school
activities such as basketball and a
scholastic competition.
The show opens at Rosh
Hashanah Junior Congregation
Services, where Troy and Gabi meet
for the first time, and realize their
interest and talent for participat-
ing in services with the song, "The
Start of Something New — On
Rosh Hashanah, Here with You."
After their friends initially pressure
them to stay in their own cliques
and social circles ("Getcha Head
in the Game"/"Stick to the Status
Quo"), the entire group comes together
to attend their classmates' celebra-
tions.
First, the flashy Ryan (Max Feber)
and Sharpay (Rachel Fishman) mark
the milestone with "Bop to the Top/
Pray Every Day:' and then Gabriella
and Troy are featured in "Breakin'
Free/Shaarey Zedek — Feel the Love."
The entire cast finishes with the feel-
good "We're All in This Together/Hinei
Mah Tov ... Gam Yachad." This finale
is a tribute to the yearlong theme for
Youth and Education at the synagogue:
"Shaarey Zedek - Feel the Love!"
Rehearsing Sunday mornings with
occasional additional practices, the
cast and crew of the musical have been
working hard, but always laughing.
"It's funny," said one third-grader,
"and we already love High School
Musical so we were able to learn it all
fast. It's funny how we made it Jewish."
For many of the parents of cast
and crew members, doing a show at
Shaarey Zedek brings back memories
of their own experiences on stage at
the synagogue during musicals and
Purim schpiels.
"Also, the kids don't miss rehearsal,
Lauren Colburn and Leora Bernard
practice their lines with Tobye Bello.
so they and their parents are at reli-
gious school, well, religiously," added
Tobye Bello, CSZ program director,
who has co-directed the produc-
tion with Yanoff and Cantor Meir
Finkelstein (who will accompany the
cast on piano).
Show time is 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May
3, at Shaarey Zedek, Southfield. Tickets
are $5 each: call (248) 357-5544. ❑
