Walk For Israel

Israel's 61st year of independence, offi-
cially welcomed on Yom HaAtzmaut on
April 29, also will be celebrated Sunday,
May 3, at Detroit Jewry's Walk for Israel.
The event begins with a picnic kosher
lunch, Israeli dancing and informational
displays at 12:15 p.m. at Temple Shir
Shalom in West Bloomfield. It follows
with a community walk of solidarity at 1
p.m. alongside Orchard Lake Road.
Mark Segal, walk chairman, has con-
vened the annual event in recent years
to demonstrate support for the State of
Israel and enable the Jewish community
and friends in Metro Detroit to express
their unity and pride for the Jewish state.
The Walk for Israel 2009 follows the
Detroit Jewish community's yearlong cel-
ebration of Israel's 60th birthday.
The route of the Walk for Israel will
start at Temple Shir Shalom (south-

east of Walnut Lake and Orchard Lake
Road), proceed south on Orchard Lake
Road, and turn around at the Sea Grille
Restaurant to return to Temple Shir
Shalom.
Walkers will wave Israeli and American
flags and sing and cheer in honor of the
ancestral Jewish homeland.
Everyone is encouraged to attend:
intergenerational families, college
students (especially Birthright Israel
alumni), people with friends or family
in Israel, members of Zionist and other
Jewish organizations, day school stu-
dents, synagogue and youth groups.
Sponsor organizations are still being
recruited. For information about the Walk
for Israel and sponsorship, contact the
Jewish Community Relations Council of
Metropolitan Detroit, (248) 642-5393.
Look in next week's IN for more infor-
mation, including where to park.

D.C. Activism
Eight Michigan representatives took part
in the Zionist Organization of America's
annual activist Mission to Washington
on March 26. They were Beverly Baker,
Rayna Kogan, Diane and Joseph Savin,
Linda Stulberg, Dorene Weisberg, Dr.
Lester Zeff and ZOA Michigan Region
Executive Director Pamela Lippitt.
Mission goers urged members of
Congress to tighten Iran sanctions, deny
$900 million U.S. financial aid to Gaza
Arabs and the Palestinian Authority until
Palestinian-inspired terror stops, and
create transparency for U.S. funds going
to the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for
Palestinian refugees. Activists also urged
lawmakers to support bills withdraw-
ing all U.S. funding for the U.N.-hosted
"Durban II"World Conference Against
Racism on April 20 in Geneva.

Energy-Efficient Meal Preparation Tips

• For soups and stew that require longer cooking time, use a
crock-pot to save energy.
• With electric cook tops, match the pan size to the element
size. A 6" pan on an 8" burner wastes 40 percent of the heat
produced by the burner.
• Use shortest oven preheat times; don't open while cooking
and turn off promptly (crack door for residual heat).
• Cook double portions when using your oven and refrigerate
or freeze remainder for another meal. It takes less energy to
reheat food than to cook it from a raw state.
• If you have a self-cleaning oven, use it right after baking
your food. The retained heat by the oven will ensure that the
cleaning uses less energy.
• Cover pans to cook food faster. www.aceee.org
• Reuse water used for boiling or cooking beans by using it as
a soup base.
• Eat more raw foods and less cooked meals. EAT LESS MEAT.
