would like
some advice on
what foods I
should eat and avoid. Julie.
Answer (continuued from last
time): Dear Julie, Last time I dis-
cussed foods to be avoided during
pregnancy. Here's some more (I
ran out of space last time):
• Unless clearly labeled as being
made with pasteurized milk.
avoid the following soft
cheeses: brie, feta, cam-
embert, blue cheese, and
Mexican-style cheeses;
• Avoid alcohol and to-
bacco. Your doctor may
recommend that you
)
avoid caffeine in the 1st
trimester, and limit it
to less 200 mg/day in
the 2nd and 3rd trimes-
ters of pregnancy.
So, what is safe to eat?
The FDA says it's OK to
eat up to 12 oz a week of the fol-
lowing properly-cooked seafood:
• Shrimp; salmon, pollack, and
catfish;
• Canned light tuna (limit alba-
core and tuna steak to no more
than 6 oz per week).
Other food items that are safe to
eat:
• Fully cooked meats and poultry
(juices run clear);
• Pasteurized skim milk, mozza-
rella cheese, and cottage cheese.
Next time: nutritionally recom-
mended foods during pregnancy.
