I World ARMENIA • THE HOLOCAUST • CAMBODIA BOSNIA • RWANDA • SOUTH SUDAN Solar Savior April 26 event to aid Darfur refugees. Karen Gales Special to the Jewish News A pril is Genocide Awareness month and the Save Darfur Coalition has been asking its members via e-mail to raise awareness in their communities. The message stopped Illana Stern in her tracks. She knew that she needed to do something and she reached out to her friends for help. Through an e-mail, Stern brought atten- tion to the atrocities happening in Darfur, in the western part of Sudan, Africa. Since 2003, more than 400,000 people have been murdered and 2.5 million people have been Come for the Lifestyle. Stay for the Friendships. Come and experience the incredible value and comfort of displaced after the pil- laging of their villages. Women and chil- dren are systematically raped and left for dead. Survivors are sent to over-crowded refugee camps where they lack adequate sanitary con- ditions, medical treat- ment and aid. Stern's e-mail sparked interest from nine Metro Detroit young adults. We quickly planned "Act Now for Darfur — A Call to Action" to be held 4-6 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills. Abubakar, a Darfuri refugee, will tell what is happening in his homeland. Paula Bolton, a Holocaust survivor, will reaffirm the world's commitment to "Never Again." The event will be emceed by Rabbi Joshua Bennett of Temple Israel of West Bloomfield. He will lead a "Call to Action" where event participants will ask President Obama to act on his promise of "unstinting resolve to end the genocide." The group has also adopted a fund- raising project sponsored by Jewish World Watch to purchase solar cookers for the Darfur refugees living in the camps. As women search outside the camps for firewood to prepare meals, many have been robbed, raped and murdered. The Solar Cooker Project "provides a way for us to overcome what has come to be known as compassion fatigue says Liz Beresh. "We know we cannot possibly respond to every injustice that arises around the world, but a $30 donation to buy a solar cooker kit [which includes two solar cookers and a year's supply of materials] can help protect those whose lives are threatened by violence and conflict." Illan Stern reminds that the Torah teaches tikkun olam, repairing the world. "We can repair the world by showing compassion for the Darfurian people who are not free she says. "We have both a moral and a religious obligation to become involved." E To view the group's video or to make a dona- tion to the Solar Cooker Project, visit: www. firstgiving.org/darfurawareness.
