Born in Akron, Ohio, he was an offi- cer and navigator in the U.S. Army and volunteered for rescue missions during World War II. He received numerous medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Croix de Guere from the French government. Mr. Shapiro was married to the late Rita Trau Shapiro for 61 years and made his living in the automobile and finance business. He and his brother, Art, owned Central Motors and Akron Discount Corporation. He loved his family, sports and staying physically fit. He is survived by his son, Michael (Paula) Shapiro of Bloomfield Hills; daughter, Nancy (Robert) Crutchley of Wadsworth, Ohio; grandchildren, Adam (Brenda) Shapiro, Jodi (Steven) Bettinger, Lauren (Jay) Rosett and Matthew (Cher) Crutchley; great- grandchildren, Reed and Riley Shapiro, Leo and Andy Bettinger, Chase and Levi Rosett and Chase Crutchley.
