Loss Noted Nationally The Polish Photographs of Roman Vishniac & Jeffrey Gusky Harold Loss again ranks among the 50 "influential rabbis." Robert Sklar Editor A college friend he had not seen in 45 years contacted Rabbi Harold Loss of Temple Israel in West Bloomfield via e-mail last week. The friend sought out his old classmate after seeing Loss' name on the 2009 Newsweek magazine list of America's most influential rabbis. "The fellow is in Israel with his son for Passover:' Loss told the JN on April 7, the day before the holiday began. "His e-mail contact began, Are you A Rabbi Loss the Harold Loss that I remember?' "So the listing has connected me with an old friend." Loss is ranked 47 on this third annual list, down five spots from last year but the same ranking he achieved the first year of the unscientific, conversation- provoking poll by three Hollywood power brokers. Loss was cited for leading a congrega- tion of more than 12,000 people. He was pleased to be honored by the April 4 list. Apri119 — July 12 Free with museum admission. He attributed his ranking to his syna- gogue, which was founded in Detroit in 1941 and moved to West Bloomfield in 1980. Reared in Florida and a graduate of Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Loss arrived at Temple Israel in 1971. An ardent Zionist, he has accompanied thousands of Michigan Jews to Israel over the years on missions of all sizes and with an assortment of goals. "Clearly, my recognition is a statement about my good fortune in choosing to be one of the rabbis at Temple Israel: he said. Loss said he was more excited to see that Rabbi David Saperstein had moved up from No. 5 to No. 1 this year. Saperstein is director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism in Washington, D.C., and co-chair of the Coalition to Preserve Religious Liberty. He's a Washington insider and power wielder — and a friend of President Obama. "His work is truly outstanding:' Loss said. Having made the poll each year, the pressure's on to continue to be ranked, Loss quipped. He noted, "We have to come up with something new and excit- ing to keep me on the list." This exhibition is organized by the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. In Detroit it is sponsored by 'Bill and Karen Davidson. Additional support has been provided by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the City of Detroit. 4'5 The Lowdown 'In blessed memory. 1465610 Cali us icalai Jo; a live powerwashing estimate! ,;) fm--. llovficeo yl POWERWASHING & SURFACE RESTORATION Commercial & Residential Powerwashing • Deck Restoration • Docks, Gazebos • Vinyl, Aluminum, Cedar Siding • Interior and Exterior Painting • We-will leave your home & deck looking clean & beautiful. • We use cleaners which will not only clean the surface, but also resist future mildew growth. • We rinse away all of our debris.
