Summer in the City leaders feted.
T
he Detroit Opera House will
host the 2009 Silent Heroes
Night Awards Ceremony on
Saturday, April 25, to recognize 18
ordinary individuals and groups cut-
ting across race and gender for their
grassroots work of transforming our
communities.
Honorees include Ben Falik, Neil
Greenberg and Michael Goldberg,
CEO, founding member and COO,
respectively of Summer in the City, a
progressive social change group from
the Jewish community that is trans-
forming Detroit through the power of
volunteerism.
"While we notice and appreciate
acts of kindness that make their way
into the media;' said Arthur Horwitz,
publisher of the Detroit Jewish News,
one of the evening presenters, "we
tend to overlook the good and impor-
tant work of quiet heroes who, outside
the glare of the spotlight, provide
invaluable service and inspiration to
those they touch."
"This is an opportunity to offer
a modest does of gratitude to those
being recognized at Silent Heroes
Night and to have them symbolically
represent the many others who toil
in our communities to make a differ-
ence."
Master of ceremonies is journalist
and television commentator Bankole
Thompson, senior editor of the
Michigan Chronicle. "The biggest sto-
ries are not the ones that we write in
our headlines, but the ones that we do
not see, the silent heroes and unsung
heroes don't normally get to us," he
said. "Too often, some of us live in our
own bubble, whether we are in the
media or in various professions. But
we need to look beyond the headlines
and help tell the stories that are not
being told."
Elias Gutierrez, publisher of the
Latino Press, Michigan's largest
Hispanic newspaper, is another pre-
senter. "I'm happy to be a partner
in this marvelous event because the
true heroes are not the ones we see in
the media. They are the people who
struggle behind the scene to create life
impacting changes."
Silent Heroes Night sponsors
include Wayne State University, the
Michigan Chronicle, the Detroit Jewish
News, the Latino Press, the Jewish
Community Relations Council of
Metropolitan Detroit, Detroit Opera
House and the African Caribbean
Chamber of Commerce.
