A Navy veteran of World War II, he was stationed with the naval intel- ligence in Japan. He received his Ph.D. in American history from the University of Michigan and taught there for 53 years until he was 80. He also became the chairman of the History Department. He received many awards, including the Golden Apple Award from the University of Michigan Hillel and the Henry Russel Award for research from the university itself. He is survived by his beloved wife, Edith Black; daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Robert Wohl of Farmington; sister and brother-in-law, Ilene and Robert Mullen; grandchildren, Lauren and Kenny Wohl. RUTH DENENFELD, 80, of Southfield, died April 3, 2009. She is survived by her sons and daugh- ary degrees from DePauw University, Wittenberg University and the University of Massachusetts at Boston. Mr. Fine was the author of 12 books, including Sit Down, Automobile Under the Blue Eagle, Violence In the Model City, American Past and a three-volume biography of the Detroit mayor, Michigan governor and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Frank Murphy. A member of the American Historical Association, he was also a member of the University of Michigan Musical Society. He loved opera, University of Michigan football and the Cleveland Indians. Mr. Fine is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 66 years, Jean Fine of Ann Arbor; daughters and sons-in-law, Gail Fine and Terence Irwin of England, Deborah and Darrell Schmidt of Troy; grandchildren, Daniel Jacob Schmidt and Emily Rose Schmidt; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, thousands of devoted students.
