Concert Of Cultures

Music reflecting the cultures of
the Jewish and African-American
communities will be heard in the
program "Common Bonds: An
Interfaith Concert," 8 p.m. Saturday,
April 25, at Congregation Shir Tikvah,
3900 Northfield Pwky., Troy.
Shir Tikvah's Schmaltz klezmer
band and the Metropolitan Detroit
Area Fellowship Choir will join for
a community concert in celebration
of brotherhood, sisterhood and the
communities' shared love of music.
The Schmaltz band, formed by
members of Shir Tikvah, will play
Yiddish and klezmer music — Eastern
European folk music — and popular
tunes. The band is led by Shir Tikvah
member Rick May.
The 30-member Metropolitan
Detroit Area Fellowship Choir will sing
gospel songs. Denard McClary is the
founder and director of the choir. The
two groups will join for American folk,
popular and Hebrew songs.
The third joint program of the two
groups, the concert came from an
idea raised during a unique mission
of African-American ministers and
Jewish rabbis who traveled together to
West Africa and Israel in 2002. During
the mission, the clergy discovered
parallels in each other's history
— slavery, pain and suffering — and
from that developed a desire to do joint
programming.
The evening will begin with a
Havdalah service that separates Shabbat
from the new week. Traditional prayers
will be recited. Rabbi Arnie Sleutelberg,
Shir Tikvah spiritual leader, and Rev. Dr.
Ronald E Turner of the local Restoration
International Christian Ministries will
bring greetings from their respective
communities.
A dessert reception, featuring
traditional Jewish and African-
American desserts, will follow the
concert. Free parking is available.
Adults, families and children are
invited. Admission fee up to and on
April 15 is as follows: $12 per child; $20
per adult; $40 per family (All members
of a family must reside in the same
household to receive the family rate.
After April 15 and at the door, the
admission fee is: $14 per child; $22 per
adult; $42 per family
Checks should be made payable and
mailed to Congregation Shir Tikvah,
3900 Northfield Pkwy., Troy, Mich.,
48084. Write Common Bonds Concert
in the memo line.
