Joy And
Meaning
W
ithout a doubt, the theme
of freedom provides the
spirit and challenge of
Passover. In obvious
ways, well-known,
memorable quota-
tions, songs and
symbols form the
outline of our festi-
val celebration. But,
also, subtle, insight-
ful reminders rein-
force the teaching of
Franz Rosenzweig:
Rabbi Norman
"The freedom of a
T. Roman
society is always the
Special to the
freedom of everyone
Jewish News
who belongs in it."
At our seder meal,
the voices of the youngest participants
must be heard! Strangers and guests are
included. Multiple languages are heard;
various ethnic and cultural melodies
and recipes are important dimensions
of the celebration. And throughout, the
words repeat: "Once we were slaves, now
we are free!"
We are free to celebrate our religious
heritage. Free to proudly re-tell our
stories. Free to identify with the faith
and courage of Moses, Miriam and
Nachshon. Free to proclaim to contem-
porary Pharaohs and Amaleks that we
will not rest until all who are oppressed
are given their freedom as well.
For our observance of the Festival
of Freedom cannot just be about the
past! It is also about our future. It is an
opportunity for us to be re-energized
and inspired.
In a large sense, the Exodus (of all
people from bondage into redemption)
is not complete. As Rabbi David Weis
has written: "The Israelites did not sing
the Song of the Sea when the first per-
son walked through the sea onto dry
ground. No, they sang it when the last
of them was free and safe."
Let us celebrate with joy and meaning.
And let us also commit ourselves to the
values of a free people and free society
— laboring and singing, praying and
caring, loving and respecting. So that
indeed next year will be in a Jerusalem of
peace and freedom for all humanity.
Chag Sameach! ❑
