er and even cheesier.
Jerusalem Pizza in Southfield is
auctioning off the first pizza out
of the oven after Passover ends on
Thursday, April 16. The entire pur-
chase price will be donated to Yad
Ezra kosher food pantry in Berkley.
"Every year, we get a few hundred
orders during the three hours or
so after Passover ends," said Brian
Jacobs, who owns the store with his
wife, Rivka."So we know there are a
lot of people out there who can't wait
to get their first bite of pizza after
going without it for the holiday"
Bidding for the 14-inch, large,
cheese pizza, will begin at 99 cents,
with the expectation being that it will
go much higher.
This is the first time the pizza shop
has auctioned off their first post-
Passover pizza, but it turns out they're
not the only ones to have the idea.
"Shortly after we decided to hold the
auction, we got a call from Yeshivas
Darchei Torah [in Southfield]. They
wanted to hold a raffle for the school
with the winner getting the first
pizza," Jacobs said.
When he told them the first pizza
was spoken for, the school raffle prize
became the second pizza baked that
night.
A staff of nine will be at Jerusalem
Pizza after the holiday ends to begin
taking orders by phone and in per-
son."As soon as the rabbis give us the
OK that the chometz we sell before
Pesach is ours again, we'll start up the
ovens and start baking — probably
at about 10 o'clock," Jacobs said.
By then, there's typically already a
line at the door.
"The first customers are usually
kids and then at about midnight, we
start to get the moms and dads who
just finished turning their kitchens
back over from Pesach," Jacobs said.
"We'll stay open until about 1 a.m.
— or when the phone stops ringing."
The store, which usually sells
everything from calzones, soup and
tuna salad to bagels, salads and cook-
ies will make only pizzas that night.
"We thought this would be a fun
way to end Pesach and to give back to
community," Jacobs said.
Yad Ezra development director Lea
Luger is thrilled with the plan.
"We continue to be amazed at the
creative and thoughtful ways people
choose to raise money for Yad Ezra:'
she said. "It's heartwarming to know
that so many people in our commu-
nity are doing what they can to help
hose who are vulnerable."
On the evening of April 8, Jews worldwide will
again celebrate the Passover Seder, telling the
story of our redemption from Egypt.
In southern Israel and along the Gaza border, as
well as throughout the country, MDA personnel are
on alert at holiday time, ready to respond to every
medical emergency, anywhere in Israel.
Our tradition tells us that our people were
redeemed "by a mighty hand and an outstretched
arm." Today, in Israel, and "next year in Jerusalem"
as well, they are redeemed by the brave Magen
David Adom personnel — Israel's medical emergency
first responders.
