U.S. team forming for
junior tourney in Israel.

Special to the Jewish News
I
is probably difficult to believe that
there's a connection between hockey
and Israel, but there is a strong bond.
The second annual World Jewish
Hockey Tournament sponsored by the
Israel Ice Hockey Federation will be
held July 5-15 at the Canada Centre in
Metullah and, for the first time, there
will be a junior competition for players
who are 18 years old after July 1.
Two junior teams from Canada and
one from the U.S. and Israel will com-
pete. The U.S. team's
coach is Farmington
Hills resident Paul
Lubanski. Michigan
Jewish Sports Hall of
Fame member Sam
Greenblatt of Walled
Lake is the director of
Brett
player personnel.
Lubanski
"We'll have some
great players from
all over the country on our team',' said
Lubanski, who plans to take 18 skaters
(including his son, Brett Lubanski) and
two goalies to Israel.
"This could be a potentially life-chang-
ing experience for the kids," Lubanski said.
"It will give them a frame of reference of
what the world is all about:"
Greenblatt, a director emeritus of USA
Hockey, agrees. "The trip will be a won-
derful educational experience for the
boys, especially if they've never been to
Israel," he said.
Even though USA Hockey plans to help
subsidize the U.S. team's trip to Israel and
provide uniforms and socks, Lubanski
and Greenblatt are seeking tax-deductible
donations to help defray expenses. Cost
for the trip is $5,000 per player.
For information or to make a donation,
call Greenblatt at (248) 624-8401.
Slava Zings 'Em
Slava
Zingerman
It's a three-peat for
Detroit-based Wayne
State University
junior fencer Slava
Zingerman from
Ashkelon, Israel.
Zingerman became
only the second com-
petitor in NCAA men's
fencing history to win three consecu-
tive epee championships when he won
the title last month in State College, Pa.
NCAA fencing began in 1941. He defeated
Princeton's Graham Wicas 15-7 in the
championship bout, avenging an earlier
4-3 loss in round-robin competition.
Champ In Town
Former Green Bay Packers and Dallas
Cowboys offensive lineman Alan
Veingrad, a member of the Cowboys'
Super Bowl XXVII champion team, will be
the guest speaker at the Sarah Tugman
Bais Chabad Torah Center's 35th
annual dinner May 3 at Young Israel of
Oak Park.
Veingrad, 45, who was born in Brooklyn,
N.Y., played for the Packers from 1986-90
and the Cowboys from 1991-92 after an
outstanding college career at East Texas
State University. He retired from football
after the Super Bowl and moved to Florida,
where he rediscovered his Jewish roots and
joined the Chabad-Lubavitch movement.
He now lives in Ft. Lauderdale and works
in commercial real estate.
In addition to Veingard's talk, Ethan
and Yoel Gross will receive the Keser
Shaim Toy-Crown of Distinction Award,
and Perel Schulkind will receive the
Aishes Chayil-Woman of Valor Award at
the dinner.
