Anyone who likes plays with penetrating endings is likely to find one in Dr.
Cook's Garden, the next production slated by Stagecrafters. The drama, writ-
ten by Ira Levin (Rosemary's Baby) and set in Vermont — follows the practice
of a small-town doctor, whose patients respect and adore him. The return of a
former town resident, who has just finished his medical training and wants to
work with Dr. Cook, brings some unexpected twists to the practice and ulti-
mately forces both doctors to explore their core values and responses to stress.
The play, directed by David Zublick, runs April 3-5, 9-11 and 16-19 at the
Baldwin Theatre, 415 S. Lafayette, in Royal Oak. The curtain goes up 8 p.m.
Thursdays-Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. $14-$16.

FAMOUS FOLK
Singer-songwriter Judy Collins is known for performing resonating folk songs
over a long career. She has written some of the music and lyrics and interpreted
what others have composed. Collins, who has toured the world to share her
talents, also has made it a point to help others. Her book, Sanity & Grace, gets
very personal as she tells about coping with the biggest tragedy in her life —
the suicide of her only son. Collins soon will be visiting Troy to appear as part
of a program in support of Planned Parenthood Mid and South Michigan. The
15th Annual Tribute Luncheon begins at noon Monday, April 20, at the Troy
Marriott, 200 W. Big Beaver. Guests are asked to RSVP by April 13. Tickets
start at $85. (734) 973-0710, ext. 141. www.ppaction.org .

around the country. Metro Detroiters will have
the opportunity to experience his unique take on
the world 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, at the Detroit
Opera House, 1526 Broadway. Sedans, who has
appeared regularly on National Public Radio, writes
for the New Yorker and Esquire. His books include
Dress Your Family in Corduroy & Denim, Barrel
David Sedaris
Fever and Holidays on Ice. The commentator has

As one of its mental health services, Common Ground provides a 24-hour cri-
sis line to help people talk through immediate and difficult personal problems.
There also are counseling and advocacy programs to assist youths and adults
with critical issues. Some 40,000 individuals have been getting help annu-
ally. The Oakland County nonprofit generally operates free of charge. To raise
funds for providing services and promoting awareness of services, the agency
has planned its first Walk on Common Ground. Eric Hipple, a former Detroit
Lion, will be opening speaker for the event, which begins 10 a.m. Sunday, May
3, on the campus of Oakland University in Rochester, where participants can
cover nearly five miles. Planners are hoping that 400 people, each pledging to
raise $100, will take part. There will be prizes for teams and individuals raising
the most money. (248) 451-3735. www.walkoncommonground.org .
