Fighting Leukemia

"Man of the Year" raises funds to help research grandson's ailment.

p

hil Goodman took the role of
family member to new heights
when his grandson Jake was
diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic
Leukemia (ALL) in 2006.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
(LLS) has nominated Goodman for the
2009 Man of the Year because of the con-
tribution the Jake and Johnny Club has
made for blood cancer research. That club
will host its first fundraiser, Slam Dunk
to Cure Kids, 1-5 p.m. Sunday, April 5, in
Farmington Hills' Costick Center, 28600 W.
11 Mile.
Goodman and friend John Hubbard,
whose son was diagnosed with juvenile
diabetes, created the Jake and Johnny
Club, an organization dedicated to finding
a cure for leukemia and juvenile diabetes.
Admission is free to Slam Dunk to Cure

Kids. Detroit Tigers opening days tickets,
NCAA Final Four tickets, sports memo-
rabilia and other prizes will be raffled to
raise revenue to fight leukemia and juve-
nile diabetes. The event includes batting
and pitching cages, entertainment, bas-
ketball courts, putting greens and Guitar
Hero.
Entertainment will be provided by Elvis
and Blues Brothers impersonators.
"Just 15 years ago, a diagnosis of ALL
would have been a death sentence. Now,
because of the miraculous treatments
and medicines that have been developed,
children like Jake can have a normal life','
Goodman says.
