April 2 e 2009

here's a growing concern
among the Jewish commu-
nity that the younger genera-
tion is losing its connection to Israel.
I understand that issue and see
where the concern comes from, but
after traveling to Israel on an alterna-
tive spring break trip coordinated by
MSU Hillel and Jewish National Fund,
I can assure the Jewish community
that those worries can be set aside.
The trip consisted of 17 Michigan
State University students and 25 from
schools around the country. Each
student raised a minimum of $950 for
JNF's Blueprint Negev Campaign.
The 42 participants engaged in six
days of volunteer work in Israel.
Our trip started in the Negev. In
Beersheva, we teamed with the Earth's
Promise organization, cultivating and
organizing plots that would soon be
gardens for Ethiopian ohm. Our proj-
ect was completed with the help of
local Ethiopian children.
In Yeruchem, we volunteered at a
children's Purim party, running game
booths, assembling and distributing
mishloach manot (Purim gift baskets)
to the needy.
In the Negev, we also worked in
soup kitchens, did weeding and
cleaned up neglected forestland.
In Jerusalem, we worked on a gar-
den, building terraces and planting.
On our way there, we picked turnips
for Table-to-Table, an organization

that distributes excess, unserved food
that would otherwise be destroyed.
The cornerstone of the trip was vis-
iting Sderot, a town near Gaza that has
been under constant rocket attack for
eight years. We attended the opening
of a JNF-funded indoor playground.
The 21,000-square-foot safe house
includes jungle gyms, playhouses,
Dance Dance Revolution, rock climb-
ing and even a small soccer field.
The volunteer work and the trip
not only left a mark on Israel, but also
made a great impact on the 42 par-
ticipants. Each of us returned home
with a new outlook on our duty as
American Jews to Israel.
