bringing the soldier to trial.
"Some of the plays I've written had
Jewish themes but not heavily so,"
says Goldstein, who will be spending
Passover in Toronto to be with his two
daughters and their families. "I'm very
happy to be Jewish, but I'm not reli-
gious at all."
Goldstein, who terms himself an
undisciplined writer, had his career
expand by completing TV scripts in
Britain.
"Because I've done a lot of different
things, I got some of my plots from
what happened to me," he explains. "I
went through the university of life. I
regret not having a formal education."
Another regret is some confusion
on the Web, where information about
a French porno star of the same name
is mixed in with references to him.
Because of that, the playwright is con-
sidering setting up his own Web site.
Halpern and Johnson started out as

an early 1980s cable TV movie called
Mr. Halpern and Mr. Johnson starring
Laurence Olivier and Jackie Gleason.
It was transformed for the stage at the
suggestion of an Israeli producer, who
brought it to Tel Aviv's Cameri Theatre.
Although Goldstein has directed the
play and has observed productions in
the United States, he will not be corn-
ing to Michigan. He is familiar with
the area, though, through his former
wife, Karen Segel Goldstein, who has
relatives in Oakland County.
"I'm a bit past retirement age, but
I continue to be involved in projects,"
the writer says. "I'm trying to get a
new play off the ground in London.
"The play is a comedy about a palm-
ist (palm reader), but underneath, it's
about the right to practice any religion
or no religion at allit takes the mod-
em fundamentalist to task, opposing
people who try to ram religion down
the throats of others." 7
