ore than 120 women gath-
ered at Yeshivat Akiva's
gym in Southfield on
March 16 to play basketball or to cheer
on their friends in the "It Pays to Play"
tournament to raise funds to benefit
the Max and Ruth Schwartz Hesder
Yeshiva in Sderot, Israel.
With 8,000 rocket missiles fired
at the city, students no longer can
remain in their yeshivah without the
construction of a new "missile-proof"
dormitory.
The excitement was palpable as the
buzzer sounded and Game One began.
All four teams played well, with team
Kaduray Shemesh (Balls of Sunshine)
emerging the final winner. Every
player left feeling empowered know-
ing that, together, they raised more
than $7,200 towards the emergency
campaign.
The roster included Leah Berlin,
Beth Brandvain, Helen Brown, Tamar
Brown, Talya Carmen, Liz Frogel,
Rosa Furman, Fallon Garfield-Turner,
Karen Gordon, Elana Greenbaum,
Carolyn Kelman, Yael Kidron, Linda
Klein, Penina Kroll, Natalie Lipnik,
Ariella Nadel, Adi Peretz, Adina
Pergament, Jamie Rashty, Rivky Ross,
Bayla Sigler, Maayan Stanhill, Rivka
Steinberg, Chava Sumkhayeva, Debbie
Wrotslaysky, Michal Wrotslaysky
and Leah Zerbib. Special thanks go

to referees Marilyn Kohn and Elana
Gottfried.
"While raising the much-needed
funds, I had more than one goal in
mind," Penina Kroll of Oak Park said
as she welcomed players and audience
members. "In addition to promoting a
sense of unity and araivut, responsi-
bility, within the Detroit community,
I wanted to raise greater awareness
of the life-threatening danger faced
by the residents of Sderot on a daily
basis."
Kroll's speech was followed by a
dvar Torah lesson given by Liz Frogel
of Southfield. She drew a parallel
between the transformative power of
the Jewish people's unity at the time
of Haman and the unity demonstrated
within our community for the resi-
dents of Sderot.
"Besides the money raised, it was
great to see women from all parts
of the community and of all ages
come together:' said Ariella Nadel of
Southfield. "Thanks for giving me a
night to remember."
Ariella Skoczylas of Southfield, who
coordinated the event with Kroll, said,
"The community has proved that it
can truly join together in collective
support of our family in Sderot. This
demonstrates how dedication, unity
and commitment can really make a
difference."
