Court Orders Death
Jerusalem/JTA — A court in
Yemen sentenced a man to death
for contacting and offering to spy
for Israel.
Bassam al-Haidari, 26, was
found guilty March 23 of send-
ing an e-mail to Israeli Prime
Minister Ehud Olmert and
offering his services. He was
sentenced to death, according to
news reports.
Two other defendants, aged 23
and 24, were sentenced to prison.
The men, who are said to be
members of the anti-Yemeni gov-
ernment Organization of Islamic
Jihad, went on trial in January.
Israeli military officials deny
Olmert was contacted.
About 400 Jews live in Yemen,
though many are seeking to
leave.
Groups Fight Ban
Toronto/JTA — A public outcry is
growing in Canada following the
government's barring of a British
lawmaker for supporting Hamas
and Hezbollah.
Although George Galloway has
visited Canada before, its Border
Services Agency declared him
inadmissible on national security
grounds. Immigration Minister
Jason Kenney
said he would
not intervene in
the decision.
Galloway,
who was
bounced from
former Prime
Minister Tony
George
Blair's Labor
Galloway
Party, is a
Scottish mem-
ber of parliament known for his
harsh opposition to the war in
Iraq as well as his sympathies
toward Hamas and Hezbollah
— both considered terrorist
organizations by the Canadian
government.
Organizers of Galloway's four-
city Canadian speaking tour have
vowed to take the government
to court to seek an emergency
injunction to overturn the ban on
free-speech grounds.
Should that fail, a delegation of
Canadian lawmakers, lawyers and
activists is assembling to escort
Galloway from the United States,
where he is on tour, across the
Canadian border on March 30.
