Events Kerry's Brother Takes Post Jerusalem/JTA — Jerusalem police shut down events scheduled for a Palestinian Authority-sponsored fes- tival. The Palestinian Culture Festival, to honor Jerusalem as the "capital of Arab culture,” kicked off March 21 in the Palestinian headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Events were scheduled as well for Jerusalem, Nazareth, Bethlehem, Gaza and Lebanon. Jerusalem police shut down at least eight events and arrested 20 organiz- ers. It is illegal for the Palestinian Authority to hold events in the munic- ipality of Jerusalem or other areas under Israeli sovereignty, according to agreements signed by Israel and the P.A. Washington/JTA — John Kerry's Jewish brother was named to a top post at the Commerce Department. President Obama named Cam Kerry, a vice chairman of the National Jewish Democratic Council, as general coun- sel of the Commerce Department. Kerry is a partner in the Boston office of the Mintz Levin law firm and has taught telecommunications law as an adjunct professor at Suffolk University Law School. National Jewish Democratic Council chairman Marc Stanley commended the selection. Cam Kerry converted to Judaism 25 years ago when he married his wife, Kathy Weinman. Haifa Mall Attack Averted Jerusalem/JTA — Israeli security forc- es prevented a serious car bombing at a major Haifa mall. The explosives-laden car was dis- covered March 21 in the parking lot of the Lev Hamifratz shopping cen- ter after one of the bombs partially exploded. Police immediately evacuated the mall and police sappers deactivated the remaining bombs. The mall and surrounding area reopened March 22. A train station is located at the mall, which is adjacent to Haifa's central bus station. Sex Segregated Bus Opposed - Jerusalem/JTA — Orthodox Jews said they will continue to run a new bus line with segregated seating to the Kotel (Western Wall) despite opposi- tion. Israel's Transportation Ministry has opposed the line, which has manda- tory separate seating for men and women between Jerusalem's haredi neighborhoods and the Western Wall. The buses began running March 19. The ministry has tried to stop the bus line, even though the issue has been frozen pending a Supreme Court decision on the matter. The Supreme Court in January ordered the Transportation Ministry to look into issues regarding bus routes in religious communities after a petition was filed by religious author Naomi Ragen and the Religious Action Center on behalf of women who were attacked for not sitting in the back of the bus. Jewish Studies In Ukraine Kiev, Ukraine/JTA — A center for Jewish studies opened in a northwest- ern Ukrainian city. The Center of Jewish Studies was inaugurated at the Ivan Franko State University in Zhytomyr. About 100 scientists, researchers and students from Ukraine, Poland and Israel gathered at the university for a conference to promote Jewish history and culture. Answering Israel's Critics The Charge Former U.S. Middle East diplomat Charles Freeman, who recently withdrew his name from consider- ation for a top Obama administra- tion post, was quoted earlier this month as saying that the "Israel lobby" has a "hammer lock" on both public discussion and policy of America in the Middle East. The Answer Blaming pro-Israel activists for the lack of criticism of Israel found in Congress, the administration and the U.S. public ignores the freedom of thought and the political diver- sity that exist in America. Freeman is an Arabist who simply cannot accept that his arguments don't win the debate. — Allan Gale, Jewish Community Relations Council of Metropolitan Detroit © Jewish Renaissance Media, March 26, 2009
