Barak Blocks Demolition

Assassination Call Hit

Jerusalem/JTA — Israeli Defense
Minister Ehud Barak has blocked the
demolition of Israeli homes built on
Palestinian land in a West Bank settle-
ment.
The order is in response to a peti-
tion submitted to the high court last
summer in which five Palestinian
residents of a nearby village asked the
court to remove the homes' occupants.
The human rights group B'Tselem
reported last December that 58
percent of Ofra was built on private
Palestinian land.
Ofra officials say the land was
purchased from its Palestinian own
ers.

New York/JTA — A New York City rabbi
condemned the call to assassinate
Palestinian leaders issued at his syna-
gogue.
Elie Abadie of Congregation Edmond
J. Safra in Manhattan said the call last
week by the leader of an Israeli pro-
settler organization to kill Palestinian
Authority President Mahmoud Abbas
and other "terrorist leaders" is "odious
and repugnant."
He added the sponsoring organiza-
tion, Americans for a Safe Israel, is no
longer welcome to host events at his
synagogue.
Nadia Matar, the co-chairwoman
of Women in Green, called for Israel
to assassinate "all terrorist leaders,
starting with Mahmoud Abbas:' in the
context of a comparison of England's
response to Nazi aggression and Israel's
response to Palestinian terror. Her
remarks were greeted with applause.

Shalit Talks To Continue

Jerusalem/JTA — Hamas says it will
continue negotiations on a prisoner
swap that would bring home Gilad
Shalit, according to reports.
The London-based daily Al Hayat
newspaper reported that Israel agreed
to release all but five of the 450
Palestinian prisoners on Hamas' list in
exchange for Shalit, an Israeli soldier
who was captured in a cross-border
raid in 2005.
One of the five prisoners was con-
victed of planning the 2001 assassina-
tion of Tourism Minister Rehavam
Ze'evi.

Jerusalem/JTA — Israeli President
Shimon Peres granted Prime
Minister-designate Benjamin
Netanyahu a two-week extension to
form a government.
Peres had set March 20 as a final
deadline, but Netanyahu and the Labor
Party have renewed coalition talks.
Netanyahu has stated that he wants
Labor chairman Ehud Barak to remain
in the position of defense minister.

Deported Guard Freed

Jerusalem/JTA — A former Nazi SS
guard was freed by Austria a day
after being deported from the United
States.
Josias Kumpf, 83, of Racine, Wis.,
could not be put on trial in Austria
because the statute of limitations had
expired, according to the Austrian jus-
tice ministry.
The ministry told the United States
before Kumpf's extradition that he
would be freed since he was younger
than 20 at the time of the crimes and
because he was never an Austrian citi-
zen, nor were the crimes committed in
Austria, Reuters reported.

Obama Appeals To Iran

Washington/JTA — President Obama
appealed to Iran's leaders to establish
renewed exchanges" with Americans
and "greater opportunities for partner-
ship and commerce."
Obama delivered the message on
March 19 via a video posted on the
White House's Web site delivering greet-
ings on the secular holiday of Nowruz,
which marks the arrival of spring and
the pre-Islamic Iranian new year.

Bomb Threatener Arrested

New York/JTA — Police in Chicago
arrested a man accused of mailing a
bomb threat to a Jewish school.
Mohammed Alkaramla, a Jordanian
national, was arrested after his finger-
prints were found on the envelope of
the bomb threat, the Chicago Tribune
reported.
A decade-old book of stamps
matching the stamp on the envelope
was found in Aldaramla's apartment,
and the text of the letter was found
on the hard drive of Alkaramla's corn-
puter, police said.
The Ida Crown Jewish Academy
received the bomb threat in late
January. The letter threatened to deto-
nate bombs at 22 educational centers
in Chicago, though no explosives were
ever found, the newspaper reported.
Alkaramla, of the West Rogers Park
neighborhood on Chicago's north side,
is also under investigation for vandal-
izing several Chicago-area synagogues
in early January, allegedly in response
to Israel's military incursion into
Gaza.
