The main controversy regards
the 1999 FDA approval of the soy
health claim that, "[d]iets low in
saturated fat and cholesterol that
include 25 grams of soy protein a
day may reduce the risk of heart
disease."
In a 2006 Science Advi-
sory and a 2008 letter to
the FDA, the American
Heart Association (AHA)

claim and concluded
that the previous 10
years of health stud-
ies had not confirmed
"clinically important
favorable effects" of soy
(or isoflavone supple-
ments) on cardiovascular
risk factors. The science
advisory also concluded that
the efficacy of soy isoflavones in
preventing certain types of cancer
had not been shown. The AHA
did say, however, that there "may
be benefits in using soy proteins
to replace foods high in animal
protein that contain saturated fat
and cholesterol."
