H arry Borden, a U.K.-based photographer whose works are included on the collec- tions of the National Portrait Galleries of Britain and Australia, is coming to Israel this week as part of a personal project to document Holocaust survivors. Borden, 44, is best known for his por- traits of celebrities and other influential public figures, including former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. But Borden is currently engaged in a more profound body of work — the documentation of Holocaust survivors, a project that seeks to contribute to the battle against Holocaust denial. He explained: "When, as a child, my father bluntly explained that I would have been killed by Hitler, it naturally Is The Ira Kaufman Chapel considering a new location in the future? had a marked effect on me — and I never forgot how unjust it seemed. "It makes me angry that, with time, foolish and sinister people feel are able to deny the Holocaust ever happened. And with this in mind, I decided to make my modest contribution — a series of portraits." Borden plans to turn the portraits into a book interspersed with a recol- lection from each person in their own handwriting. So far he has photo- graphed 75 individuals in Britain and Australia, and hopes to eventually shoot at least 150. On Friday, March 27, he will be arriv- ing in Israel for two weeks with the hope of finding survivors who would be willing to be photographed for the project and add their handwritten rec- ollection. _ We planned ahead, considering carefully the central location to the cemeteries and the population we serve. The location and building still fit our needs perfectly today. Our extensive parking area and four points of entry and exit make us easily accessible from all directions. My six- and eight-year old children are very close to their grandfather who's dying and in Hospice care. I want to bring them to the Chapel, but not the cemetery. Is this the right decision? I'm often asked this question. Remember, what children see is often less frightening that what they imagine. I find it best to discuss the entire process from death to burial prior to the funeral. Knowing what to expect usually allows them to participate throughout. My mother has organized a pre-arranged funeral with a graveside service. If our family wants to change that for any reason, such as the weather, can 1., ve alter the arrangements? Yes, we meet and review all of the arrangements. When a graveside service has been predetermined, there is an understanding that severe weather could alter the plans. THE IRA.
