Renderings of what the Venetian Ballroom would eventually look like "helped," as did seeing the final product at a party for 600 thrown by Detroit-based Wayne State University in November, after the hotel opened, she said. "That gave us a better feel for things" as well as the opportunity to notice any kinks that need to be worked out before her big day. For others, the sawdust wasn't bothersome at all. Beth Scissors, a dermatology resident at Henry Ford Hospital, had her heart set on getting married at the Book Cadillac long before it opened — even before she became engaged. "I had read articles about the renovation, and it stuck in my head," she said. She and Alden McLellan V, of Indianapolis, had no qualms about putting down a deposit six months before the hotel opened. "I'm a little more laid back than the typical bride," Scissors said with a laugh. "I don't have a binder to keep track of all the details. I like the art deco yet modern feel of the place, and our wedding will reflect that." She also trusts the staff, led by catering sales man- ager Rebecca Maziarz, formerly of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Dearborn, to pull off a five-star affair. Maziarz has fielded many inquiries from the Jewish community regarding the hotel, "and I expect more, especially once we're kosher," she said. She intends to reach out to the area's kosher cater- Lindsay Abrahams ers, including Paul Kohn of Quality Kosher Catering in Southfield. Kohn, who has trucks outfitted with kitchens that can be pulled up to any property, says in theory "there is no place we can't go." Always eager to "check out" new places and cultivate relationships with managers of new facilities. "All I need to do is a walk through, and send my mashgiach ahead of time. Fortunately, our Star- K [kosher] certification is hotel friendly," he said. The hotel has few detractors, but some vendors worry that the Book Cadillac will not lure people away from such established venues as the Ritz-Carlton, which is close to the airport, or the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham, or the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester, which are in walking neighborhoods and more attractive for guests who come to town for a weekend of wedding festivities. "We're definitely a more urban experience;' said Scott Stinebaugh, sales and marketing director for the Book Cadillac. "But some people like that for a change from the typical suburban hotel experience. "Here you have access to museums, theaters, the waterfront, Windsor, not to mention our world-class restaurants and spa, all within the hotel." "It's a great anchor for the neighborhood," said Don Cohen of B'nai Brith. "There's a classy refinement to the hotel that isn't gauche. Even my shoes felt more comfortable glid- ing across the carpet — once it was nailed down."
