Automotive Germany
I read with great interest the
commentary by Edwin Black
("American Corporate Complicity,"
March 12, page A24) on the rela-
tionship of U.S. companies and
the Nazi regime before and during
World War II.
I read his book IBM and the
Holocaust when it was first released
and later heard Mr. Black at the JCC
Jewish Book Fair.
But I must point
out a glaring
error in his essay
when he wrote
that "during the
first weeks of
the Third Reich,
General Motors
President Alfred
Slaon commit-
ted the company
and its German
division Opel to
motorizing a substantially horse-
drawn Germany, preparing it for
war."
Several automotive histories
make it clear that Germany was
already heavily industrialized long
before World War II and even had
numerous auto pioneers decades
before the U.S., specifically Daimler
and Benz who developed one of
the early internal combustion
engines by 1885. Actually, Germany,
France and England were compet-
ing with the United States to be
the first major producer of autos
for individuals. In addition, I have
seen many photos over the years
of pre-war German cities with cars
and trucks on city streets — which
makes it hard to describe Germany
as a nation that relied mostly on
horses, as Black claims.
