Ever hear of a Reuben
Sandwich with just coleslaw,
Russian dressing and Swiss cheese?
... No corned beef? ... If not, you have
now, and can try one at the new also-
open-to-the-public Henry's Restaurant
in recently opened Henry Ford Hospital
West Bloomfield, Maple between Drake
and Halsted ... "Even without the corned
beef, it's still a big request by patients and
visitors:' says Chef Jeffrey August, in the
hospital's room service department.
The Meatless Reuben is one of the
sandwiches from Culinary Director Matt
Prentice's two-year search for his Healthy
Healing menu items ... But don't order a
true Reuben without corned beef at anoth-
er delicatessen other than one of Matt's
two Deli Uniques (West Bloomfield and
Bloomfield Hills) or Henry's, or you may
be considered ready for a straightjacket ...
`Almost everyone loves corned beef and it's
delicious, but those on a health kick should
eat it in moderation ) ) says Matt.
Seven food stations in Henry's
Restaurant include deli with chicken or
turkey and vegetable sandwiches; pizza
and pasta, international, soup (mushroom
barley, low-sodium chicken, carrot bisque,
asparagus bisque, etc.), Asian, American,
etc. ... Gals are going ga-ga over the
almost 30 listed salads ... And also avail-
able are rare roast beef and hamburger
sandwiches.
A lighted stairway into a beautiful
atrium with tables, chairs and sofas, the
spacious open restaurant sector and the
hall areas, and a soon-to-come 120-seat
outdoor patio, make up much seating for
healthy chewing.
Every so often, if you look
closely, you'll see Matt, still plying
his given trade, making sandwich-
es behind the Henry's Restaurant
deli counter as he so often does
at his Plaza Deli on Northwestern
Hwy., Southfield ... Although now
a big restaurant owner entrepre-
neur, he is still the same humble
Matt Prentice that so many
folks know and admire ...
going to revolutionize hospital food': says
Matt. "I'm using the food to heal:'
Plus the Meatless Reuben, Henry's Deli
also has a Turkey Reuben, both featured
as well on his Healthy & Healing menus
at Matt's Deli Unique restaurants ... Yes,
that's his wife, Lisa, at the West Bloomfield
Deli Unique, Orchard Lake Road, coordi-
nating things daily and making sure the
operation is a smooth one.
Speaking of Matt's other dining spots,
one of the best catering gals in this region,
Donna Rosen, is again doing her wonder-
ful things at the Shiraz catering expan-
sion that goes along with its restaurant
operation on Telegraph, Bingham Farms
... The beautiful outdoor Atrium garden
will again be available for many of Donna's
wonderful catering presentations that
folks still remember, plus utilizing part of
the former Morel's space.
ALTHOUGH CLOSED for a "tempo-
rary winter break:' as of this writing no
decision has been made on the status
of Il Posto, Northwestern and Franklin,
Southfield ... Ownership says it is unsure
as to the reopening or closing of the
upscale Italian restaurant.
THE BRAIN TRUST in the Shirlee
Bloom Kitchen at Vineyards, Northwestern
Hwy., between Middlebelt and
14 Mile, Farmington Hills, has
come up with another winner
... The previously not available
for Passover new dish of Chicken
Breast Crisp, covered with crispy
brown onions, a delicious item, is
now also obtainable for Passover
Shirlee and her staff are
making the yummy delight
with onions dipped in egg and
crispy browned with Passover matzah meal
for an equally great flavor ... It even sounds
and tastes good enough for a year-round
flourless presentation.
And her test kitchen has also made the
Passover holiday a bit brighter for many
with herbed shmaltz for Passover ... The
traditional shmaltz mixed with basil, dill,
etc., gives a lip-smacking taste.
LEAVE IT TO owner/chef George
Kulenios to come up with another idea at
his Historic Holly Hotel in nearby Holly
... George's wife, Chrissy, is Irish and he is
Greek, so last weekend, to celebrate their
anniversary, George put on a St. Patrick's
Day dinner ... This weekend, March 20-
22, they'll celebrate with a Greek Dinner
... Appetizers galore, many along with
entrees that you won't see at a lot of other
Greek places ... fasolatha soup, salad
with grape leaves, olive sauce, etc., grilled
sea plaid, lamb kleftiko, grapes and goat
cheese and ravani, toasted honey and
almonds dessert, $39 per person.

when I read of your experience at the
Carnegie Deli in Las Vegas. Even though
this is a 'branch' of the New York deli, you
were dealing with Westerners. They call
this omelet a Denver. How do I know? My
twin sister, Eudice, and I learned this les-
son when we played venues all across the
country. So next time you find yourself in
Las Vegas, try asking for a Denver omelet
instead of a western. Betcha they'll know
what you're talking about" ... Eunice Rose
(Eunice and Eudice Margolis were
known as the Tracey Twins singing at
clubs and theaters and on TV around the
United States and Canada, working with
Steve Allen, Mery Griffin, Dick Clark, Della
Reese, Four Lads, etc ... Locally, they
appeared at the Gayhaven, Club Cliche and
in Windsor at the Metropole).

favorites like thin vermicelli with ground
shrimp on sugar cane.

GOOD CASHIER DEPT. ... At
Hiller's Market, Orchard Lake Road, West
Bloomfield ... Excellent gals like Donna
Moore and Thushari Samaradiwakara are
among those with careful price-punching
efficiency and smiling positive attitudes,
both assets so very essential for good store
and customer relations.
