Saving Children
The article "Mending 'Broken Hearts"
(March 5, page Cl) touched my heart
very personally.
My granddaughter Tovah Libi
(good heart) was born July 25, 2007,
with a congenital heart defect (CHD)
called hypoplastic right ventricle.
Her parents, Rachel Weiss Berger
and Benjamin Berger, were fortunate
enough to reside in New York City
where Morgan Stanley Children's
Hospital of New York-Presbyterian
is located, one of the few hospitals
capable of successfully perform-
ing the necessary surgeries to save
Tovah's life.
Due to this unique situation, our
family has become acutely aware of
the vast range of heart defects and the
blessing of having outstanding doctors
able and available to save these chil-
dren's lives. We also have learned that
limited resources in many areas of the
world result in low survival rates for
babies born with CHD.
Rachel and Ben came to know about
Save a Child's Heart and have sup-
ported it, educating and encouraging
others to do the same. We are so grate-
ful to have the medical centers in our
midst that can provide the necessary
treatment for Tovah. Save a Child's
Heart is making this accessible to
other children less fortunate.
The added bonus of Save a Child's
Heart, as highlighted in the article,
is the amazing opportunity to "build
bridges of peace making the orga-
nization doubly valuable. People-to-
people interaction is a powerful way
to create relationships. The lifesaving
experience for our family has been life
changing. Our appreciation and grati-
tude for those who saved Tovah's life
is unending. The bonds of friendship
and respect between the Israeli doc-
tors and their teams and the families
they help are immeasurable.
Who knows what the accomplish-
ments of those saved children will be
in the years to come? Maybe messen-
gers of peace?

Helping Hands
To my dear friends in the Jewish corn-
munity:
Thank you so much for helping my
daughter, Devra, and me through this
challenging and emotional period in
our lives following the fire that burned
us out of our home last month.

We truly appreciate all that the
community has done, especially
my employer, Hillel Day School of
Metropolitan Detroit, as well as
co-workers, friends, family, Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan and
Congregation Shaarey Zedek of
Oakland County, to name a few.
You all helped us with so many of
the things we lost in the fire. And to
those things that were irreplaceable,
you gave us the emotional support
that permitted us to accept and move
on. Your kindness and support again
make us realize that the most impor-
tant things in life are friends and
family.
Todah rabah!

What A MusicFest!
We would like to thank our Jewish
community for supporting the JCC's
Stephen Gottlieb Jewish MusicFest
("Come Hear The Music," Feb. 19,
page C7). Each year, the MusicFest has
grown; this year was no exception.
Our goal was to present an array of
events to please a diverse audience.
The concert by our local cantors and
cantorial soloists delighted the audi-
ence with their incredible voices. Dr.
David DiChiera from the Michigan
Opera Theatre and the Fleur de Lys
Chamber Ensemble added a new
dimension to the MusicFest that was
very well received. We sang along to
Fiddler on the Roof and were wowed
by the jazz arrangements of Jewish
composers presented by the Buddy
Budson Trio with Ursula Walker.
For the youngsters, we offered Kids
and Strings. Our older adults were
captivated by the musical talents of
Elaine Serling. For the more tradi-
tional Jewish music lovers, Safam
rocked the house and Yale Strom with
Hot Pstromi played their beautiful
klezmer melodies. Melissa Manchester,
our special guest artist, enchanted the
audience with her wonderful voice and
masterful songwriting.
Through the generosity of our cor-
porate sponsors, patrons and commu-
nal organizations, the JCC can bring
such outstanding cultural events to the
Jewish community.
