Elliot Darvick, 24, is the son of Martin and Debra Darvick of Birmingham and a content and development strategy leader for an automotive Internet company in Orange County. His fraternity brother, Adam Reich, 25, from Long Island, N.Y., is a law student at the University of Southern California. Reich was assigned the case of Connie Keel last year. In 1980, Keel was convicted of being an accessory to murder while, according to Darvick's Web site, "she stayed in a car paralyzed in fear while her abusive husband and his cousin made a spur-of- the-moment decision to rob a liquor store and shoot the clerk!' Last fall, Reich argued that Keel should be paroled; on Oct. 29, the state parole board agreed. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger must make a decision in the case by March 27. Reich enlisted Darvick to create a Web site for Keel to put pressure on the governor. The Web site — freeconnie.com — went live on Feb. 7; it had more than 3,000 Elliot Darvick hits in its first few weeks. The three-page site includes information about the case, ways to contact Schwarzenegger and argu- ments used by Reich and the parole board in recommend- ing Keel's release. Darvick is a product of Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit, Cranbrook-Kingswood School in Bloomfield Hills and Washington University of St. Louis, where he met Reich. Reich said that statis- tics are not in Keel's favor — California governors rarely parole convicted fel- ons. However, he said, their campaign will make it hard for Schwarzenegger to give the case "just a cursory glance." — Alan Hitsky, associate editor Primin Our Defens f you have a son, a daughter, a niece, a nephew, a grandchild or a friend who is a college student unaware of how to react to orchestrated anti- Israel rallies on campus, take note: Easy-to-grasp materials from the international Israel education organization StandWithUs can help. The timing is pivotal. The fifth annual Israeli Apartheid Week on campuses worldwide took place last week. Its anti-Semitic effects will linger throughout the month and beyond. IAW, which operates from offices around the world, including New York City, is a hate-filled spectacle calculated to energize anti-Zionists and vs. win over the uninformed. The goal is to demonize Israel by equating it with racist South Africa, which reigned 25 years ago, and to justify demands for the same cultural and economic boycotts imposed to end apartheid. Los Angeles-based StandWithUs got it right: "IAW is an effort to lynch Israel through a free-for-all of misinformation and wild exaggeration that often crosses the line into traditional anti-Semitic libel applied now to the Jewish state." StandWithUs materials are available via www.standwithus.com . Click on Apartheid Response Materials. One booklet illustrates that the pluralistic, open, democratic Jewish state is, in fact, the opposite of apartheid's legal system of oppression and discrimination based on skin color. Another booklet spotlights the Arab nations that systemically practice gender, sexual orientation, religious and racial apartheid. Hampering the Jewish community in countering the anti-Zionist propaganda machine is an inability to refocus the world on the lies and distortions of Israel's enemies, who use their fundamental hatred of Zionism to support intolerance and tyranny. Too many Jews are under informed and recoil. Strengthening the knowledge of our college students should help inspire the rest of us to learn how to refute the defamations hurled unceasingly toward the Jewish ancestral homeland.
