Why Detroit Matters The editorial "Why Detroit Matters" (Feb. 26, page A5) raises an important rallying call: "Detroit still matters to us because we still care about it!' Hats off to Editor Robert Sklar for such a mean- ingful article and for this impressive reminder to our community. The Jewish Historical Society of Michigan is one of our communal orga- nizations that has consistently focused on the city of Detroit — not only on our his- toric Jewish roots there, but especially on the current connections and substantial contributions of Jews to the well-being of the city. In celebration of its 50th anniversary, the Jewish Historical Society, in coopera- tion with the American Jewish Historical Society, is particularly proud to present a nationally acclaimed traveling exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum, "From Haven to Home: 350 Years of Jewish Life in America." The exhibit will open in May and remain through August. A Scholars Symposium on Sunday morning, May 17, will bring together for the first time the distinguished direc- tors of the Judaic Studies programs at Michigan's three largest universities, Michigan State, University of Michigan and Wayne State University. We hope that every family, every club, every organization will arrange in advance for a docent tour and make a Detroit outing to this special exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum. Estimates vary, but most experts believe that the mullahs control- ling Iran will be have the ability to pro- duce nuclear weapons by the end of this year. We know that these despots already have the delivery capability because they've been able to launch satellites. The tyrants in Tehran are obsessed with wiping Israel off the map and will soon be able to do it. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his hench- men are turning up the heat and the noise by stirring up their clients, Hamas and Hezbollah, to commit acts of ter- rorism and war. We're at the two-minute warning. Nuclear armed and deranged, the mullahs present an existential threat that Israel can't accept no matter how much pressure they are getting from the European Union and the Obama admin- istration. Those of us who care need to get involved. It took us almost 2,000 years to get Israel back. If the Islamic fanatics suc- ceed in annihilating the Jewish state, it will result not only in the deaths of mil- lions of Jews, but also will be the death knell of the Jewish people. We just don't have the numbers or the drive in the diaspora to sustain our- selves. It would take direct intervention by God to prevent this catastrophe. Those who care need to make your voices heard loudly and clearly. And working together as a people would cer- tainly get God's attention in a positive way. We need to protect Israel from her bloodthirsty enemies before the final buzzer sounds. Douglas Miller Franklin An Unbridled Israel Everyone who is pressing Israel for a "two-state solution" is forgetting something: The Palestinians have been pretty clear that they will settle only for a one-state solution, and that one state does not include Israel. Even Fatah, the alleged moderates in relation to Hamas, have listed as constitutional goals: • Article (12) Complete liberation of Palestine, and eradication of Zionist economic, political, military and cul- tural existence. • Article (13) Establishing an inde- pendent democratic state with complete sovereignty on all Palestinian lands, and Jerusalem is its capital city, and protect- ing the citizens' legal and equal rights without any racial or religious discrimi- nation. How can it be any wonder to anyone that no matter what Israel offers, wheth- er 50, 90 or 100 percent of the West Bank, it will not be enough since Israel is not offering national suicide? And the demise of Israel is the only offer that the Palestinians will accept. Trying to please the international community by clinging to the illusory two-state solution is as futile as try- ing to please the Palestinians. As we've seen from the reactions of the world to Operation Cast Lead and every other episode in which Israel has struck back against terrorists in self-defense, the international community doesn't quite have Israel's best interests at heart. The disappearance of Israel would please more than just the Islamic community. To depend on the feckless interna- tional community, no matter what Israel offers the Palestinians, is as foolish as depending on the Palestinians to live up to their promises of peaceful coexis- tence. The only thing in this world that Israel can depend on is its own strength and its own resources. Harry ()nickel Ferndale
