S

tudents from Yeshivat Akiva
in Southfield took part in the
Yeshiva University National
Model United Nations (YUNMUN)
conference in Stamford, Conn., on Feb.
10. Assistant Principal Kathy Sklar
served as chaperone. Here are some
reactions from the students who par-
ticipated:

"Though I knew that my commit-
tee's decisions on this mock United
Nations conference would have no
impact whatsoever on the world at
large, I still valued it as an experience
to become more aware of the issues
that our world is faced with every
day.
"For once, I became not solely con-
cerned with issues relating to Israel
or America. My attention was instead
focused on my mock representative
country — Bolivia, and the struggles
it is faced with. A country halfway
across the globe with one of the poor-
est economies had suddenly become
my main concern.
"Throughout the conference I truly
came to a better understanding of
tikkun olam, repair of the world. I
realized that while we often become
solely concerned with the issues that
affect our personal lives, we must
understand that people and countries
all over the world are struggling as
well.
"Only by lending a helping hand to
others, even those halfway across the
globe, may we truly perform tikkun
olam."

- Eryn Fox, 11th grade

Isaac Mayer Wise Shabbat
Detroit-area Reform congregations
and NFTY-Michigan alumni will meet
at Temple Kol Ami on Friday, April
10, for the annual Isaac Mayer Wise
Shabbat. The 7:30 p.m. service will be
preceded by a Passover potluck dinner
at 6:15. NFTY alumni are encouraged
to attend this "reunion" Shabbat, which
will feature NFTY-style music.
The Metropolitan Detroit Federation
of Reform Synagogues (MetFed) will
provide kosher-for-Passover chicken
and beverages; those attending are

"As a second-year delegate,
YUNMUN was just as stimulating,
educational and fun as the first time.
I was a delegate for the International
Labor Organization;' our topics were
child labor and human trafficking.
To be honest, I had never really given
these topics much thought before.
"YUNMUN is a great experience
for many reasons, but to me it's such
a great experience because it teaches
you to care."

- Miriam Barth, 12th grade

"As a delegate for Finland on the
World Health Organization, I increased
my knowledge on world health con-
flicts and worked with a team of del-
egates from Jewish high schools across
the country to solve these problems.
"Meeting other Jewish teens, solv-
ing health issues and experiencing the
daily work of a United Nations repre-
sentative are some of the highlights of
this program!"

- Molly Goldmeler, 11th grade

"I had the opportunity to serve as
a Bolivian delegate and research my
platform in today's world. Through
intense meetings, I became aware of
many countries' current political sta-
tuses and I now feel more involved in
the current political situation.
"From meeting new people and
eating delicious food to signing reso-
lutions as a Bolivian delegate, I really
had a great time! I am glad that I was
able to take part in this social and
learning experience!"

- Ayielle Movsas, 11th grade
