Obituaries HOSPICE HEROES THE PR MISE Because Sandy Danto's grandparents' lives were forcibly extinguished during the Holocaust, she and her husband, Jim, wanted to find a way to honor their mem- ories with the dignity they were denied. Obituaries from page C31 The Dantos created the Gitel and Yankel Muskovitz, Sarah and Kalma Garfinkel Memorial fund at JHCN to help individuals and their families cope with terminal illness and end-of-life issues. "We support JHCN because it helps provide the dignity denied to my grandparents at life's end," Sandy says. "We are grateful for the spiritual support, counseling and compassionate services JHCN offers." He was born May 15, 1911, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He co-founded Prudential Investment Company in 1939. He began his working life as a fruit peddler and bricklayer and rose to prominence as a pioneering design- er and innovator in the post-World War II production housing business, remaining an active developer until his retirement. Mr. Katzman was an advocate of fit- ness and an active healthy life. He was an avid skier, fisherman, tennis player and walker. He took trips with his buddies to the mountains of Vermont and Idaho before the sport of skiing really caught on and later enjoyed nur- turing his family's love of winter out- doors in northern Michigan. Fishing trips to the wilds of northern Ontario were fondly remembered by all who accompanied him. He traveled widely, always returning home with great stories and an enthusiasm for the new places and people he had visited. His love of the outdoors and adventurous spirit shaped and inspired the lives of his children and grandchildren. Mr. Katzman was a mentor and inspiration to many in his children's generation, admired for his creative, open-minded and calm nature, his unfailing good humor, his interest in the ideas of others and his efforts always to find the "peaceful solution." Above all, he was a family man. He was totally devoted to his wife of 64 years and to his children. They were, beyond measure, the most important part of his life. He was an abundantly kind and generous man who from early adulthood and throughout his long years took care of his immediate family, his parents, his sister and his extended family by marriage. All who knew and loved him will remember and miss greatly his warm smile and gentle spirit and will try to emulate the good and honorable life that he lived. Mr. Katzman is survived by his wife, Jeanette Katzman of Bloomfield Hills and Florida; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Richard and Bonnie Katzman; daughter, Jane Glass; grandchildren, Talia Glass, Ben Blass, Shane Rooks and Steve Sadowski, Brady Katzman- Rooks, Jena and Ray Medina, Josh and Liz Katzman; eight great-grandchil- dren; sister-in-law, Betty Katzman; nephew and niece, Robert and Lisa Katzman; other loving relatives and friends.
