above the fireplace is Harmony of Equilibriums Flow by Marcus Glenn, an

African-American Southfield artist. Shapiro, a musician, and Glenn have visited

jazz clubs together in Detroit, where Glenn has sketched Shapiro into a series
of his paintings. Above, right: In this 1656 etching, Rembrandt depicts Jan

Lutma, a well-known goldsmith at the time whose son presumably studied with

Rembrandt. "Rembrandt sought a psychological portraiture," says Shapiro. "He
wanted to convey the inner personality of the sitter, not just a likeness."
