• Next stop: the city of Opporto, the second-largest city in Portugal. Porto is on one side of the Duoro River, and Gaia is on the other (Porto + Gaia = Portugal, and thus the country's name). While in Opporto, visit the Sandeman Port Wine Cellars; the Majestic Cafe, which is resplendent with 1930s charm; the Bohalo Market, where you will find everything from beautiful fresh flowers, spices, fresh vegetables and fruits to sou- venirs; and the Lello Bookstore, which provided inspiration for J.K. Rowling in her writing of the Harry Potter books — the staircase is worthy of Hogwarts. • At the northern tip of the country is Guimares, a small town with a lovely town square and gardens. The northeastern part of the country offers rolling hills, mountains with lots of heather and restored windmills. • Heading south along the bor- der with Spain, one comes to Belmonte, which is home to 250 Jews and has one of four in-use synagogues in the country (there is one in Opporto and two in Lisbon): Beth Eliahu has a lovely interior with polished wood and a unique ner tamid (eternal light). • Traveling south from this point, one sees storks and cork trees. Stop in Evora, and marvel at some of the wonderful products that can be made of cork, includ- ing purses, hats, wallets and shoes. This city, also a World Heritage site, has the remains of a Roman temple, an early Gothic cathedral and the intriguing ossuary chapel, made of the skulls and bones of thousands of monks. • Algarve, in the north, is a treat for the beach lover. Stop at Cape St. Vincent for a view of the end of the world." The grottos are worthy of inspection by way of small boats, and the village of Lagos is a lovely resort town for leisurely dining and shopping. • A swing north again will bring you back "home" to Lisbon. Visit St. George's Castle, take a ride in the Iron Elevator for a breathtaking view of the city, walk through the many side streets to lovely shops, investigate the many museums and savor the food of great restaurants.
