It was one of only 30 teaching hospitals with car- diovascular residency programs listed and the only hospital in southeast Michigan to receive this recognition eight years in a row. Providence is recognized by the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Hospitals Benchmarks for Success study, which identifies those hospitals that have achieved excellence in care, efficiency of opera- tions and sustainability of cardiovas- cular performance. The study, in its 10th year, exam- ined the performance of 970 hospitals by analyzing clinical outcomes for patients diagnosed with heart failure and heart attacks and for those who received coronary bypass surgery and angioplasties. It found that top ranked facilities consistently outperform their peers, especially in terms of mortality and complication rates. While the average mortality rate for cardiovascular patients is very low (3.4 percent), the mortality rate for bypass surgery was 26 percent lower in the 100 Top Hospitals cardiovas- cular winners. The award-winning hospitals demonstrated higher per- formance on the evidence-based core measures published by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and cost $1,542 less per case, on average. "This achievement shows that we are succeeding in providing the highest quality and most compas- sionate care to our patients:' said Shukri David, chief of cardiology at Providence.
