Shabbat Showdown: Chef Carl Herskovitz of Ferndale

T

he opportunity to spice things up a bit in the kitchen brought dozens of young
professionals to two recent cooking events. The Young Adult Division of the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit served up a speedy four-course meal
during a Feb. 26 demonstration called 60 Minute Shabbat Showdown.
About 40 people participated at Specialties Showroom in
Berkley. Chef Cari Herskovitz, who owns a kosher catering
business in Ferndale, taught the crowd how to make butternut
squash soup, teriyaki salmon, lemon-garlic chicken, green beans,
oven-roasted potatoes, salad and a brownie parfait.
"She made everything from start to finish in 60 minutes flat:'
said Jessica Goodwin of Southfield, a Federation campaign
associate."We got to try everything afterwards in a buffet-style
dinner. Everyone left with great cooking tips, full stomachs and a
recipe book:'
Across town, kosher Asian fare was on the menu during a Feb.

"It was very hands-on; everybody made their own sushi and helped with the other
dishes:' said Levi Stein of West Bloomfield, the Shul's program manager."We'll be host-
ing kosher gourmet cooking events each month. The idea is to educate young people
about how to make all different kinds of foods in a kosher way."
Spotted in the kosher cooking crowds were: Michele and Scott Rosenblum and Sara
and Ryan Holdan, all of Birmingham; Henna and Chaim Klainbery of Southfield;
Jennifer Farber, Melissa Roberts, Sarah and Benji Rosenzweig, Ariana Segal and
Tal Gutkovitch, all of West Bloomfield; Adam Orley of Bloomfield Hills; and Michal
