C
haim Topol has gained
40 years of international
acclaim portraying Tevye the
Milkman in Fiddler on the Roof but
the actor has accepted a new role that
he ranks as vastly more meaningful.
Topol, performing as Tevye March
3-8 at the Detroit Opera House, is
heading up a charity establishing the
Jordan River Village in Israel. The
village will be a getaway for children
facing life-threatening illnesses.
"I consider the Jordan River Village
the most important work I've done
in my life:' says the actor, 73, also the
star of the film version of Fiddler.
"My mentor was Paul Newman, who
is known for starting Hole in the Wall
Camps.
"Six years ago, Paul convinced me
to build a camp in Israel, and the vil-
lage is now being completed. It will
be in the lower Galilee and accept
children of all creeds.
"Paul knew that I founded Variety
the Children's Charity in Israel and
became an international ambassador
for it. That's why he thought the vil-
lage would be a good idea for me, and
I'm very grateful to him for introduc-
ing me to that project and helping
with it."
Topol, in his seventh production
of the musical whose lead character,
a father of five daughters, must face
the changes the early 20th century
brings to his little Russian shtetl, has
not changed his interpretation of the
story but realizes how his perspective
has changed.
"There's a big difference from the
time I was 30 and played the part:'
Topol explains. "Then, I was busy
maintaining the impression that I
was 50.
"When I first got the part, I had
an 8-year-old daughter; and I had to
imagine what it would mean to give
away a daughter to a stranger who
Chaim Topol
comes along. Now, I have two married
daughters and a married son so I've
experienced giving away children to
strangers who come along.
"When I first sang 'Do You Love
Me?' as part of the show, I was sing-
ing about a marriage of 25 years and
was then married 10 years. I thought
it would take a lot of effort to main-
tain a marriage for 25 years. Now, I've
been married 52 years."
The actor, born in Tel Aviv, started
his acting career during his military
service and went on to establish a
traveling theater group and found the
Haifa Municipal Theatre.
Although anchored in the Fiddler
role, Topol has had many other
acting experiences. Stage credits
include Othello, View From the Bridge,
Ziegfeld and recently Gigi. Among the
30 films he has made are The House
on Garibaldi Street, Flash Gordon
and For Your Eyes Only. TV work has
included films and series.
"Over the years, I realized that
minorities everywhere embrace
Fiddler on the Roof' says Topol, who
remains hopeful that Israel eventually
will find peace. "I feel the people on
stage and the people in the audience
becoming one family."
Fiddler on the Roof will be performed 8 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, 2 p.m.
Saturday-Sunday and 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 3-8, at the Detroit Opera
House. $24-$74. (313) 965-4052.
