Dear
Bar , o mat-
ter what I try, I
just don't seem
to be able to
lose weight.
Is it more difficult for some
people to lose weight than others?
Thanks, Jack.
A
nswer: Dear Jack, I get
this question a lot. In fact,
I did two articles on this
topic back in 2006. The simple
answer to your question is, "Yes,
it is more difficult for some people
to lose weight than others."
My experience teaches me that
you should first forthrightly ask
yourself the question, "Have I
made a focused, good faith effort
to lose weight using traditional
methods like a healthy diet,
reduced intake, and exer-
cise, but am simply unable
to accomplish my reason-
1v", , able weight goals?" If the
i .
) honest answer is, "Yes, I
have made that effort,"
Vs
then you may be suffer-
ing from a multifaceted
problem known as
"weight loss resistance."
.
(
Still an evolving area
of study, the concept of
"weight loss resistance,"
currently, encompasses a
range of conditions that may help
explain why some people can lose
weight while others cannot.
Among those conditions are indi-
vidual hormonal activity, genetic
makeup, metabolism, and par-
ticular health issues. I'll discuss
this in more detail next time.
