n the midst of our latest winter storm, they threw on Hawaiian leis and retreated
to a tropical oasis inside Langan's Northwest Lanes in Farmginton Hills. Several
fresh inches of snow didn't stop about 50 young adults from attending a Saturday-
night, Hawaiian-themed bowling JEWbilee party Feb. 21, spon-
sored by the Young Adult Division of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit.
"It was kind of nice to escape to a warm place (at least in our
minds) during a snowstorm;' said Jennifer Pevos, 30, of West
Bloomfield.
The legal assistant recently got involved with YAD and helped
plan the event. She moved back to Metro Detroit from Boulder,
Colorado in 2007.
"I honestly didn't think I'd have that much fun bowline she
said. "But I really had a blast!"
The night of bowling, drinks, snacks and mingling was held
free of charge as long as participants agreed to donate at least

$18 to Federation's Annual Campaign. Beyond that, it was a purely fun, social event
meant to bring 20- and 30-somethings from across the community together.
"We had decorations set up. There were palm trees, lights and grass skirts around the
tables;' said Craig Eidelman of Berkley.
He co-chaired the event along with Ariana Blumenfeld of Berkley. "Some of the
women put flowers in their hair:' Eidelman added. "We tried to make it more festive."
Organizers were thrilled with the turnout despite the bad weather and say they saw a
lot of new faces. Pevos says she came out, and got involved with YAD, to re-connect with
the community after living out of town for many years.
"I'm trying to make it here Pevos said. "This is where my family is and this is where
I'm from. Hopefully, other young professionals will follow my lead."
Spotted in the bowling JEWbilee crowd were: Jodi Beals, Bree Joseff, and Jamie and
Sara Iden, all of West Bloomfield; Melissa Blum of Farmington Hills; Amy Friedman
of Commerce Township; Rebecca and Gil Fedlman of Farmington Hills; Michael
Carnow of Royal Oak; Hy Safran of Franklin; Marc Himelstein of Detroit; and Ariella
and Mike Skoczylas of Southfield. El
