options that solidify the participants'
connection to Metro Detroit.
Options so far vary from member-
ship at the JCC fitness center to free
enrollment in Jewish education pro-
grams, free admission to young adult
events and funding support for future
Israel trips. Another coupon would
"buy" a Shabbat in a Box with food
and ritual items to enjoy a Shabbat
meal. The Detroit Jewish News plans to
offer free one-year subscriptions.
HMD welcomes ideas for how to
accentuate this Jewish Detroit birth-
right. I urge the business, service and
communal communities to decide
how they can step up. The application
process for spring/summer Birthright
Israel trips opens today.
Time To Talk
The beauty of Birthright Israel is the
free trip with no strings attached. The
question regarding the local birthright
is, ``What do we want to give our young
people for free — with no strings
attached — that will entice them and
inspire them to want to be a part of our
Detroit Jewish community?"
The question echoes.
"This is an important conversation
that we, as a community, should be
having on an ongoing basis','Starkman
says. "Let's begin the dialogue."
Indeed!
Outgoing President Gary Snyder sets
the bar high for Hillel of Metro Detroit
in its pursuit of heightening not only
a Jewish connection, but also a Jewish
Detroit connection in partnership with
the larger Jewish community.
Says Snyder: "Every day, we are
faced with challenges to that mission.
